There’s only 8 coaches total that beat saban at Alabama and never lead a team to the natty game. Croom was one of 8

I assume he means Tennessee only beating Saban 1 time despite playing every year
And Miss State, Saturday's opponent.

I was a junior in high school in 2007 and don’t remember as I was focused on playing HS football, but what were most Alabama fans thoughts on Saban in year 1 after losing to teams like ULM and MSU with croom

Saban entered the picture as Fulmer was headed out. And left as soon as we started to get our shite together with Heupel. His success was during our worst time as a program and to be fair I think he would've beaten the hell out of us most of the time even if it hadn't been. He did with everyone.

I think most knew he had a big task of rebuilding ahead. They had some good talent but no depth and a losing culture.
Losses were competitive and a big win vs UTk.
ULM allowed for the purge of cancers. Razed the program to the ground and built it back with recruiting and a physical mindset based on his "process."
It was frustrating, but even then, most knew it would be a longterm process. The near immediate success in 2008 and 2009 was actually more shocking than the ups and downs of 2007.
That said, I was deployed all of 2007, so I didn't have to really suffer through it in real time.

Then he throws it away on 4th down on our last possession.

Interesting bit of trivia:
How many Alabama players were taken in the NFL draft at the end of Saban’s first year?
Answer: 0.
But Shula didn't leave the cupboard bare. On the OL, Saban inherited three future All Americans...OT and first round pick Andre Smith, C Antoine Caldwell, and OG Mike Johnson. Add All American PK Leigh Tiffin. All American safety Rashad Johnson, that LSU fans may remember getting 3 picks in Baton Rouge in 2008. All American DB/PR Javier Arenas. JPW ended up being a decent QB and came close to winning a national championship. Glen Coffee at RB was a stud. Other starters on the 2009 National Championship team were recruited by Shula. Saban just needed to get rid of the cancers like DJ Hall, whom John Chavis apparently, for some reason, decided to not cover at all on a bright October morning in Tuscaloosa...the morning that the Textbook Five were suspended.
Saban had some rebuilding to do, but Shula left him with a helluva lot more talent than many people remember.

Hogs were 1-2 wins away from tying up the all time series (seriously) when Saban started and the rest is history

I'm surprised that MSU isn't on that list.
I'm not.
Was the 2007 game where Jimmy Johns got knocked out on a kick-off return? He was the "Dual Threat" QB from Brookhaven that committed to Bama over State because Croom wanted him at WR and he told him Bama will never play you at QB. I think he ended up getting kicked off the team for dealing cocaine.

My favorite stat is that every single Alabama recruit from 2006 to 2020 that stayed just 3 seasons all left with at least 1 NC ring. 15 recruiting classes...that's INSANE.
Well, all but one player.
Well, all but one player.

I guess Mark Richt makes this list as well then?

Autrey's zebra crew gifted you that game. You couldn't beat us so they helped a couple of times just when you needed it.

Nope.
First year, 2007. Bama has the ball on the State 2 yard line, third and goal, under 10 seconds left in the half, leading 9-3. They're about to go up 12-3 or 16-3, right? Nope. John Parker Wilson throws a 100 yard pick six, and Bama goes into the locker room trailing 10-9. And they never led the rest of the game. JPW throws another INT in State territory three plays into the second half, and State scores again. Final score: 17-12.
The wildest thing about State vs Bama in that era was that Bama had like a three year streak of not scoring an offensive TD against State.
Bama won 17-0 in 2005 on two defensive touchdowns.
State won 24-16 in 2006 (Bama’s only TD was a pick 6)
State won 17-12 in 07 (Bama kicked four FG’s)
