Basketball will be the new king. It's already the second most popular sport globally, and only continues to grow massively each year.

This would make sense if not for this:

NCAA Basketball Attendance Falls

On Tuesday, the NCAA released attendance figures for men's basketball for the 2016-17 season, including data for 347 D-I men's teams, reflecting a slight dip for the third straight season.

Here's my problem with going to a game:

You know way less about what's going on in the game by attending then if you were plopped on your couch watching it on tv.

You know nothing of what is going on in the rest of the college football world either. It's like a wasted Saturday.

So, I can save $$$, watch a more entertaining product of my game on TV and watch other games at the push of a button. Its a no brainer compared to paying $2,000-$2,500 for a weekend in Oxford all in.

Agreed with the 3rd point:

Another thing I wish stadiums (not just SEC) would do is play a 2 minute clips of live game going on at the same time during those long TV time outs. timeouts are torturous but at least having a game live would help a little.

Stop making 100k + stadiums.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

As a sport we've out built the demand. Everything else you said was spot on as well.

Go smaller and make the experience better.

UNC’s focus for Kenan Stadium is to increase fan enjoyment and comfort. The effort is to increase the quality of the game day experience.

The biggest decision was to remove all of the aluminum benches and replace them with individual light blue seating. In 2019, no one wants to sit for three hours on a bench when most fans are used to attending games at professional football or baseball stadiums. Also, redoing the locker rooms to NFL quality. Beer and wine will be served in all parts of the stadium starting this year. Field turf is being installed which will improve the field aesthetics for late fall. Next year, work will be done to improve the bathrooms and concourses.

The days of the 100k stadiums, with fans sweating on benches is over. Soon you will see tarps covering large portions of the upper decks of these stadiums.

Cost is 90% of the reason. I love attending games and would go a lot more if I could afford it, but right now I can only make one or two a year.

The Georgia-Notre Dame game alone is looking to run nearly $400.

The stadium caters to the donors at the students’ expense. The students are future donors. Dumbass move.

How do you control the “type” people who come to a public event? Make it more expensive. Dumbass elitism.

If you are watching the game on espn you are already buying a ticket. Where does espn get a lot of money to buy the conferences? DTV’s high arse satellite prices.

All this is legal because we love our football. Sell a generator double price and have to buy two just to get one during a power outage and see where it gets you. Thank you sir, may I have another a Saturday morning battle cry

Does "playing cupcakes" count in the "you know how the game will turn out"?

You stay 2 nights, or the hotels have that requirement?

Don't you think EVERYWHERE wants traffic infrastructure fixed...not just colleges? Try leaving a major sports game in a reasonable time or getting anywhere during morning/afternoon rush hour traffic.

True...I'm not out in the weather, have a good view of the game, unlimited food/drink, no bathroom lines, save a ton of $ on gas/lodging, etc....

But don't get to enjoy the excitement with thousands of other fans actually at the game.

You seem to be arguing from a stand point of
"so what".

It's not a matter of "EVERYWHERE". "EVERYWHERE" is NOT a college sports fans issue.... Which happens to be the topic. It's even in the title.. "SEC Football Attendance is dropping"

Just like curing cancer is not part of this topic.... neither is "EVERYWHERE".

People have been predicting the demise of Football most of my life...a recession was inevitable, but to think the game will disappear in the next 50 years seems silly. The CTE issues should be the most concerning part...I only have girls but I would never have never encouraged my son to play football even though the sport provided my education free of charge.

Again, you seem to be arguing against a ghost. These are current facts. Arguing about that is not changing the facts that attendance is dropping off and has been for 7 out of the last 8 years.

And unless something changes, it will continue to drop.

-It's not the economy.. It's kicking arse.
-People are not dead.... plenty of fans

1. Reduce prices! Almost 1k for a weekend for a family of 4. 6 home games that’s 6k and most families with kids don’t have 6k to spend on entertainment.
2. Make the teams more competitive. Same 8+- teams have a actual chance to make playoffs. Rest are playing for some meaningless bowl game at some non-desirable destination such Shreveport, Memphis (freeze to death) and Birmingham. If no chance for at least having chance to make playoffs or win Natty then why even be interested. That’s why at MSU women’s basketball and men’s baseball have huge fan interest. Both have at least a chance to play for a Natty!

It’s called Bama fatigue! Whether Bama cheats and pays huge $$$’s for players is for another debate.

Sandstorm was when I was in college...mid '90's. Those kids would be in their 20's by now.

Not every game is Note Dame, though.

I took my family of 6 to Vandy (homecoming) last year and the prices were great.

I took my daughter to Tennessee and my son to UMass.

People act like there is some big mystery to solve. There isn't. Spend what it is worth to you. That's capitalism. If I only feel like taking 1 to a game, then I will.
