I love Rupp.

I know they are going through renovations, but when I went, Rupp was a letdown. The exterior is nothing short of horrendous. It looked like a FedEx distribution center that is connected to a Hyatt or Hilton. Inside was definitely big, but it felt like a retirement community. Basically, all of Kentucky's blue hairs were in attendance in their blue sweater vests and blue cardigans, and they essentially sat on their hands. It wasn't nearly as loud or raucous as I had expected.

That must be a wrassling match in the bottom pic. Sorry they weren't ranking wrestling arenas that happen to host shitty basketball.

I lived in downtown Athens for a few months for work in 2020/2021 and an arena in downtown would be really cool. I love how all the bars are right there in one area. I don't know where there is enough space in downtown though for an arena and parking?

There is ample space behind the Classic Center (Thomas St) downtown moving toward the river. The Classic Center has toyed with building a 10k arena or amphitheater (or both) in that area for a few years now though I don’t know to what end of at all UGA has been involved in discussions for using those potential spaces. I know a minor league hockey team has been brought up a few times as the primary occupant for an arena.

Yeah, Jake Scott is more or less the reason those metal grates exist in the spines of the coliseum. He would get drunk and ride his motorcycle over the top on a dare. 60s were wild, man

Wish on campus concerts were still a well regarded time as they were back in the 70s and 80s. But then I suppose in Athens we have venues enough for those events off campus

I would put Tenn above Auburn and the hump should be right on their heels

The Hump used to be an intimidating place to play. However, our AD completely screwed up the atmosphere when he moved the students behind the basket. There hasn't been an intimidating men's game in there since the Stansbury days. We're making some changes, but I worry if we are sinking to a Georgia level of caring for basketball.

Duke does it pretty well. I went to a game at Cameron a few years back. both ends and along one baseline.

Easier to do at a place like Duke though

While, not on the baseline, Reed has both ends all students. It's not bad. Both sections are very large too.

Sounds like a good compromise

Ahh ok gotcha, with me working so much and COVID I didn't get a ton of time to explore Athens so I prob just didn't see this area.

There’s not much to see back there, honestly, so easy to miss unless you go looking for it. But the space exists, just needs willing participants to build it out and tenants to occupy/make it worth the while. I’m just not sure what UGA’s appetite is for a shared facility (especially when mens basketball is relied upon to some extent as a revenue generator; is a competitive mens basketball program in Stegeman more of a money maker than a potentially great program in an off campus facility where gate and concessions may be split?). Too, would the Classic Center be willing to build a facility if UGA only “rents” the space for conference and big OOC games (while playing the early tune up slate in November and December in Stegeman)?

Yeah that crowd age has always been an issue. Rupp is the type of place where all the money and season tickets have been passed down for generations so it’s hard to get new blood down in the lower bowl. The outside is what they’re renovating now.

That’s why our SEC tourney and ncaa crowds are better bc the younger fans that can’t all get into Rupp show up at those tournaments.

Here’s a video that shows what the outside renovations will look like

I like South Carolina's arena a lot. It's like a steeper more condensed Bud Walton.

TBA and BWA are pretty freaking awesome and huge. Rupp sucked in my opinion or it just lacked the same atmosphere. Of the newer areas, Auburn got it right. Most of the SEC has no business playing in these caverns. Built a nice, smaller arena with fans right on top of the action.

TBA and BWA could be NBA arenas. Auburn's new gym is nice and provides a great home court advantage thanks to Bruce Pearl being a great coach, but it is totally different than TBA and BWA. It's more of a snug, old school college basketball barn. It reminds me of Cameron Indoors at Duke.

Kentucky and Lexington missed the golden opportunity to build boxes to put those old arse frickers and move students to the floor.

The arenas should be used for over 100 years and valued for their architecture. Instead, we treat them as though they were disposable steel and concrete.

I figured Vanderbilts would be last with that weird raised floor design.

It seems most of the venues are similar. Not really sure what one can do to make a place that much different from other places.

Not even trolling. Mizzou attracts dozens of fans for basketball. That post-win hog call really echoed in there last month

I’m a huge proponent of build a new arena downtown Athens

They'll need to move fast to do that. Downtown is a damn gold rush right now with a lot of corps. snatching up the land to develop bland arse apartment/restaurant/office space buildings.

Just saw the plans for a new development right at Broad Street and Newton. Took down the hotel and fraternity house that sat right there to do it.

Aside from downtown, where else on campus/near DT can they throw a new arena?

I actually think Vanderbilt could be a very good, perennial NCAA tournament basketball program if they ever invested in a difference maker coach like Auburn did with Bruce Pearl.

As a fan, I can't stand watching games in their gym. I can't stand being trapped within a box with a limited view of the entire arena around you. It's a claustrophobics hell on earth. But when they are actually good, Vanderbilt's funky opera arena gymnasium can be a nightmare to play in.
