What is/was great about college football is the regular season. Three months of meaningful games. Playoffs detract from that. The more games are added, the less the season matters. I can live with 4 teams, but anything more is too much. With 8 teams in, you get a free loss guaranteed. The blue bloods will probably get two free passes. I can hear the whining now as Bama wins their 20th NC with two losses.

Yep.

Thread title is enticing, but a bit off the mark.

What Saban essentially said is that he thinks the playoff and playoff media hype contribute to diminishing the importance of other bowls to some fans and the NFL draft bound players, such that they're more inclined to consider sitting them out.

He probably is right about that.

Some truth, but allowing sports writers to crown a champion was a worse idea. The BCS would always favor SEC teams because of the strength of schedule in the league, so the rest of the county was jelly. It is what it is.

I think he's completely wrong. I think for years players have just been waiting for the first 2 or 3 players to sit out and open the floodgates. Bowls haven't meant shite outside of the top 2 or 3 for a very long time. Having 5-7 teams in bowls have done far more to devalue them than the playoff has.

It's probably hard for Bama fans to think about since y'all are in the freaking playoffs every year but you wouldn't have been interested in a game again Oklahoma this year?

I wouldn't have been very interested in a meaningless Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma. Hell, I wasn't excited 3 years ago when we played Oklahoma in a meaningless Sugar Bowl.

Not true... Andre Smith, Antoine Caldwell and the textbook scandal(when he sat SEVERAL very important players during bowl games and during the year) say hi...

So your statement makes you sound like a butthurt baby back bitch..

He was pretty much forced to sit all of those players.

The decision was out of his hands.

I disagree. A full playoff like the NFL has only rewards the hottest team at the end of the season. Why can't the season remain highly important? This is a tough sport. Put more teams in the playoff and great players will stop playing the last few season games. Rivalries will become less important. Why play your best players in the Iron Bowl if you are already in the PO? The Michigan/OSU game this year wouldn't mean shite cause both would be in a 6 team PO. So, just bench your best players. Same with our SEC Champ game. 4 IS ENOUGH.

You could move rivalry games to the middle of the season.

If he wasn't "forced" then you believe, in all seriousness, he would have let them play??

Yes, because what they did wasn't that bad. It wasn't nearly as bad as getting arrested with drugs and guns.

They broke NCAA rules. The only way to play the game, win, and have it not be vacated was to sit them.

I'd be down with 8 teams if it was the 5 power 5 Champs and 3 wildcards. I like conference championships and they should mean something.

I applaud you. However, on the meaningless bowl games, if corporations can come together and establish a bowl and schools receive money from it, then why not have them... Simply from a financial perspective the crappy bowls are a revenue source for the schools playing.

I love college football, so I like having 40+ bowl games. 5-7 MSU gets to go to sunny St. Petersburg for a bowl game, sounds like a fun thing to do the day after Christmas and I'll be watching every minute of it.

That's basically an NFL preseason game. Which starters don't play in, even when healthy.

Then what would you replace them with? FCS teams? The last games would be even more meaningless. 4 IS ENOUGH.

Shouldn't you be playing golf or something? You are retired, correct?

Sounds like a nice game for senior day.

Should expand to 8 and say there.

Wait, you honestly think the playoff lessened the importance of bowls compared with the BCS?

Saban is the GOAT coach but he's wrong on this. It makes zero sense and there's not a single argument you could possibly make for it.
