Mizzou not being good has nothing to do with the rules or the precedent.

Miles let a db transfer to Alabama. His name escapes me right now.

Phelon Jones. And he didn't let him freely. Jones had to sit out a year, with Smith is free to do.

Smith was in line to get some significant playing time. Going to a rival like GA (who might win the East) is akin to your recent ex-girlfriend starting to date your best friend and telling him all of your shared secrets. A stab in the back.

I was thinking a little broader here.

It's what happens in the "system." Kids get "processed." Saban doesn't care about these kids unless it involves them contributing into the "system."

It's what happens when you sell your soul.

Kirby did the same thing with kids to Miami and other SEC schools, even those not on the schedule.

Slight difference, that wasn't a graduate transfer. Kirby wouldn't have been able to block a graduate transfer to Miami. Turman also came out and said he didn't want to go to Miami.

Point was if Deiter was transferring to a MAC rival for their conference title my guess is they'd treat it a bit differently, though I'm not sure the MAC's specific rules on grad transfers inside the conference.

Title is misleading. Saban isn't blocking Smith from transferring. He's blocking him from getting a waiver and playing this year. If he wants to transfer, use his redshirt year and play in 2017, he can.

If this is true, then I have no problem with him not being released.

He also pulled the scholarship of a recruit right before the season after he had moved in on campus.

These things happen. All schools do it. Rules are in place. These guys have options, I wouldn't cry for them too much.

Nope. Kirby has the exact same rule

But one of the first changes Kirby Smart made upon becoming Georgia's new head coach was putting an end to Richt's liberal transfer policy. Under the Smart regime, players will not be granted releases for intra-SEC transfers or any school employing a coach who has recently worked for Georgia.

Saban cares about 1 thing in this world.

His own success.

Why isn't Bowling Green blocking the transfer of the WR?

How could they? Dieter already graduated from Bowling Green and he transferred out of his conference. If Smith want's to transfer out of the SEC then he wouldn't be required to sit a year.

Smith has plenty of options to play elsewhere, he just wants to play for Kirby. Hell, Kirby wouldn't allow a UGA kid to transfer to Miami to play for Richt so I'm sure Kirby understands the situation.

Phelon Jones was a non-scholarship member of our roster in 2009 (due to transfer rules) and then was able to play in 2010 (his last year at LSU was 2008).

Phelon Jones - LSU to Alabama

quote:

After Jones was redshirted, defensive coordinator Bo Pelini became Nebraska's head coach and John Chavis became LSU's defensive coordinator. Jones started two games in 2008, but after falling on the Tigers' depth chart, he decided to transfer the following spring.

"A lot of people don't know this," Tony Jones said, "but (LSU coach) Les Miles would not give us a release to Alabama. He gave us a release to Auburn, but we never visited Auburn. Les is a good guy, but I had to talk to him many times. He finally gave Phelon a release to Alabama."

Chris Black is going to start at Mizzou. There is either something else going on here or Saban is just being a dick. My bet is on the former.

Chris Black transferred to actually play. He would play little for Bama. I don't know why Smith wants to transfer, but it is not because he wouldn't play this season at Bama. No coach in the SEC would release a starter to another SEC team that could use that guy to help beat you in the regular season or SEC title game this coming season. Saban isn't being a dick about this. The kid can stay and play or be granted a release to any other program in the country outside the SEC.

Kirby isn't the one complaining and the reason he's being called out is because Chris Black was allowed to transfer inside the SEC so his mother has an issue with it.

It has absolutely nothing to do with legalities. Some of us actually do understand the rule. Sorry you're daft?

Right, for undergraduate transfers.

Under NCAA rules, Kirby can't block a graduate transfer to a school outside the conference if the player enrolls in a degree program not offered by UGA.

Bama has invested 4 or more years recruiting, training, coaching, mentoring, educating, tutoring and more into Mo Smith. He doesn't owe Bama his soul for that, but he does owe us the honor of not going to a direct competitor where all we've invested in him could potentially be used to beat us. He should understand that.

He can transfer and play immediately at any school in the country he wants to outside of the SEC. That is NOT too much to ask. If he is dead set on playing at UGA, he can sit out a year and play for them in 2017. If neither of those options is appealing to him he could play his senior year with his teammates as a starting DB on the best D in the nation. I'm not sure why that seems so unappealing to him, but don't whine or get your mom to whine in the media about how mean Bama is just because we don't want 4-5 years of work and investment going to a rival we could see in the Georgia Dome. Man up and either finish your career with your team or transfer to a non-SEC school and get on with your life.
