Very few teams in the portal era are fortunate enough to have a quality, experienced backup like Johnson. Usually, your backups are going to be young and unproven. So you don't know what you have.
I actually think Milroe has played really well this year. His backups did not appear to even be close to ready against USF.
If Milroe was out, and you switched Johnson for Simpson/Buchner, Bama would be favored by 10.

That’s a good take. And I agree. He hasn’t been that bad. The game against you guys was close and he was being forced to throw from the pocket. If he puts a few things together we could be a good bit better. This weekend will tell us a lot.

It's like he's a running back or something.

You are so fricking stupid. A&M will eat Simpson alive. Your best bet is to have milroe play. He can at least move. Very quickly I might add. But if Simpson plays am will win by 2 scores plus.

If this is actually true, anything less than A&M -7 should be a very easy take.
Without Milroe, there is no reason to believe Alabama has any semblance of an offense whatsoever, and A&M is probably a top 3 defense on the crimson tide schedule

Simpson was the 4th highest rated dual threat QB in his class. Milroe can run but takes a lot of sacks, which means he hasn't been decisive about taking off until it's too late. He improved on this a lot last week pulling it down after one or two reads, but we'll see if continues improving on Saturday.

Honest question for the Bama fans.
Do you think the problem is primarily Milroe, or do you think the problem is Tommy Rees?
Cause honestly I think it’s Rees.

I'm undecided on Rees. In the UT game there were multiple plays where if had Milroe executed them they would have been easy touchdowns.
And we've also had I think 4 touchdowns wiped off of the board due to dumb penalties.
It seems like he could roll Milroe out of the pocket more with bootlegs, but I'm not an Xs and Os guy so I don't know what the deal is there.
Calling plays is always hard when your oline is sucking, and your QB is green and isn't good at reading defenses, but we've seen our Oline start to gel, and Milroe seems to be going through his reads more. Jury is still out, but we'll learn a lot this weekend.

Combination of Milroe being a limited passer, Rees not calling plays to cater to his QB's strengths, and the OLine being average at best through the first few games.
I know it was against State, but all these things looked at least marginally improved last weekend. We're all in the same boat wondering if they will continue to improve or if they will revert back to what we saw earlier in the season on Saturday.

Lot a rumors flying around about milroe hamstring injury
Posted on 10/5/23 at 12:40 pm to Roger Klarvin
Is the rumor coming from the same guy who told Kiffin T Rob was calling the defense?

I keep seeing this from some Bama fans, and it reminds me of the adage that the most popular player on the team is frequently the backup QB. How anyone could have watched the USF game and concluded that anyone other than Milroe should be the starter is beyond me.
Bama's OL isn't the same post-Flood, and your WR's aren't what they once were. The D is still very good. A mobile QB that can make enough plays in the passing game and stretch plays/make something happen with his legs is your best path forward (at least this year). If Milroe starts - I'd bet Bama. If he doesn't, I'll do something that is anathema to my very being and unload on A&M.
On the other side, I saw Max play plenty my son's freshman year at LSU. I realize he's improved, but to me he is a completely different QB under pressure. He has a slow release and tends to make poor decisions when you get in his face. If Bama can get to him, their odds of winning go way up.

There is absolutely no real basis for thinking that Simpson is better than Johnson.
Simpson couldn't beat out Tyler Buchner for 2nd string.
Ty Simpson is getting the 2nd string reps and relieved Milroe against State.

It's weird not seeing the seemingly simple/successful plays that the majority of CFB runs. Screens, quick throws to the outside, slants. There's no way Milroe can't handle those.

the USF game
Our O-line isn't great but the USF game was a pretty big outlier, both in how they played and the fact that Booker was out. That game also saw our freshman LT, who is very much still figuring things out, repeatedly get beat by a small, fast rusher. We've made schematic changes since then and he's improved a bit. And we ran the ball well that game (RBs ran 30 times for 203 yards). The issue was pass pro.
They were spotty against Texas, better against Ole Miss and dominant against State. They are clearly figuring out the new scheme and have finally gotten comfortable as a unit together. They'll also be facing their biggest test since Texas this weekend, so all of that "improvement" will be put to the test.

Well yea, we had one of the greatest WR rooms in the history of college football. Now 4 of our 6 leading receivers (WR/TE) are freshmen or sophomores.

And they're excellent this season, even in their own right bordering elite. In fact, in the unusual event they get balls thrown their way, they've bailed Milroe out on some bad throws.
Alabama’s got some solid receivers this year and a quarterback who can't see open receivers and get the ball to them.

Bingo, this game comes down to Rees vs Durkin and which idiot fricks up less.

Simpson was sacked 5 times in less than 2 quarters of play by the vaunted South Florida defense.

Once or twice by holding onto the ball too long, and the rest by getting pressured immediately after the snap. Context is useful when talking about these things.
