Cecil Hurt, longtime sports columnist at The Tuscaloosa News, died Tuesday at UAB Hospital in Birmingham from complications from pneumonia. Hurt, who was 62, joined The Tuscaloosa News in 1982 as a sports writer and seven years later became the newspaper’s sports editor and columnist.

"In pro football, teams put a 'franchise' tag on their most valuable players, and at The Tuscaloosa News, Cecil was the franchise,” said Ken Roberts, city editor of The Tuscaloosa News. “Our readers considered his column an essential part of being an Alabama football fan.

Damn. He gave AU hell over the years, but he was good at his trade.

Only a year older than me. Tempus copulatum fugit.

When Saban got hired, the first two media members he wanted to speak to in his office were Cecil and Finebaum (before his SEC Network days). Those two controlled so much of the narrative when it came to Alabama football.

The day Cecil asked Shula if his offense was fundamentally flawed following that 2006 loss to Miss State, the fans really turned on Shula and he was fired a week later.

His passing will leave a hole that will be incredibly difficult to fill.

RIP to the best to ever do it.

Not too many out there better than Cecil. His column about Luke Ratliff’s passing was special, along with many other things he wrote. An exceptional reporter, and in my experience an even better man. He will be missed.

RIP, Cecil

That really sucks. He was the best and the last of the old school. His takes on anything Alabama were always spot on.....even if it was negative. RIP Cecil Hurt.

A terrible week for this to happen. I’ve followed him on Twitter for years. He knew the University of Alabama better than anybody. He lived the good and bad times.

God speed Cecil.

The way the news had been coming out and the time he had spent in the hospital sort of pointed towards a bad outcome...this is sad news...the loss of a true journalist.

Irreplaceable.
