Right now, would you take a Gene Chizik Auburn tenure at your school?

So basically you have two choices. You can take the current trajectory of your team and see what happens, or you can have something substantially similar to Chizik’s Auburn tenure? Here is a detailed breakdown

Year 1

For whatever reason your current coach leaves the program. You hire a guy with an awful record at his previous job and wasn’t necessarily a hot commodity. You come out hot and win your first few games including a non-conference opponent that ends up ranked. You play your closest rivals tough and end the season 8-5 (3-5) with a win in one of the Florida Bowls. You receive votes in the final AP Poll

Year 2

Start the season barely ranked but ride a generational talent to a Heisman and an undefeated National Championship. You have multiple exciting games including your biggest rival and your Natty opponent. Your new coach receives a massive extension and raise

Year 3

You take a big step back but still pick up a road conference win over a team that finished in the top-15. Other than that you get blowout by all the elite teams you play. You end up 8-5, ranked in the final BCS poll, and get a win in a good bowl game.

Year 4

shite absolutely hits the fan. You go 3-9 and winless in conference. You lose by at least 3 scores in 5 conference games and the QB play is a mess. You fire your coach and owe him a great deal of money for the next few years. Still recruiting was consistently in the top-10 throughout his tenure. You now have to search for a new coach and see what happens

It's been a decade! This is too good. Bless you Auburn! I hope y'all get another Cam this decade.

It was fun the first two years, but was a nightmare in the end. I don’t want to repeat it. He seems like a very normal person, but he became very paranoid his last two years.

No. I think he’s a good guy and his ability to navigate the chaos in 2010 was huge, but I don’t think he’s cut out to be a big time head coach.
Although as much damage as he did in 2012, he left enough in the cupboard to get us back to the SEC Championship and to the NC game.

good point. AU was a hair away from 2 national championships in 2010 and 2013. Very close.

frick no. Eugene needed Trooper Taylor to cheat his arse off to get that 2010 tainted championship. That team and championship is remembered as being bought and paid for with guns, money, drugs, and whores.

Interesting that both Auburn fans say no so far. Chances are y’all will have a true Natty competitor in at least 1 of the next 4 years and never have anything nearly as bad as 2012

For AU fans it is not even a debate. If it hadn't been for 2010 they would be on a 60 plus year NC drought and the ridicule that comes with that.

Anyone not named Alabama or LSU should take that.

I think a strong argument can be made for UF and UGA. Do you give up your great coach for possibly the next 10 years for a Natty, 2 ok seasons, and an awful year? Particularly UGA who could definitely win one under Kirby at some point

2013 is the reason he needed to be fired. How a team goes from 3-9 to a national championship game appearance is absolutely on the coaching. I’ve said this many times, I sat behind the Auburn bench in 2012 for a couple of games and you could see they had quit on the season. That is absolutely unacceptable.

Absolutely. A national title is a national title. Add in he left and they went to the title game the next season, so he didnt leave a broken program.

I would absolutely take a Gene Chizik tenure as defensive coordinator at my school right now.
