Regarding Pete Golding's departure from Alabama...

I was talking with my BIL, an Ole Miss alum, over the weekend. He insisted that Saban really wanted to keep Pete and offered him a raise when Pete made it known he was leaving for Oxford.
Is this true?
I know a lot of Alabama fans weren't happy with his performance and I just always assumed that he had been told to find another job.

Yes. Saban retired because he knew it was actually Pete behind his success. That is why Lane was torn about LSU once he found out Pete would not follow.

Once Pete left, Saban saw the writing on the wall and got out. He knew without Pete, he was cooked.
How many national titles did Saban win after Pete left? Hell, how many title games did he even make?
I rest my case

I think it was a surprise. One thing about Saban he would always help someone find a landing spot but he always had someone lined up. Kevan Steele albeit a good coach probably wasn't number one on his list.

Saban wanted to keep Pete but Pete came to Ole Miss because his family and wife's family is close and they wanted to be close to home. It's as simple as that.

Pete looks great on paper at the end of the year. But if a team finds something that works, Golding is so slow to adjust. 3rd and Golding is tough on fans. The 2022 Tennessee game was a great example of this. After the second TD put an extra DB on Hyatt and make someone else beat you.

The final score of 52-49 refers to the historic college football game played on October 15, 2022, where the #6 Tennessee Volunteers defeated the #3 Alabama Crimson Tide at Neyland Stadium. This memorable matchup on the "Third Saturday of October" snapped a 15-year losing streak for Tennessee against Alabama.
Key moments and highlights from the game:
The Game-Winner: Tennessee kicker Chase McGrath hit a 40-yard "knuckleball" field goal as time expired to seal the victory.
Record-Setting Performance: Tennessee wide receiver Jalin Hyatt had a legendary game, catching 6 passes for 207 yards and a school-record 5 touchdowns.
Quarterback Duel: Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker threw for 385 yards and 5 touchdowns, while Alabama's Bryce Young threw for 455 yards and 2 touchdowns in a high-powered offensive shootout

Maybe Saban did want to keep him, who knows, but after the disastrous 2022 UTenn game, I don't recall a single Bama fan that wanted him around anymore. I took up for him more than most over the years, but I was ready for him to go as well.
Having said that, I was impressed at how smoothly and successfully he was able to take control of and manage the team after Kiffin abandoned them. Could be that he's a better HC than DC.

That seems odd, Tuscaloosa and Oxford aren't that distant. Hammond is probably close to the same distance from either.

Lane never had a defense that cracked the top 50 before Pete. And Pete had the #2 total defense in the country in 2024.

His wife is from the delta. Takes like 5 seconds to find out Pete went to delta state.

Pete was Saban's best DC during his tenure there

So you're saying Pete left Alabama just to be an hour (my estimate) or so closer to his wife's family?

I actually think he's a really good DC but I do hope this is the case. He's very organized and players respond well to him.
As a DC, he was really good for Ole Miss. We moved up 40 spots in year 1 under him, had a top 10 defense in year 2, and despite replacing just about everyone and the offense getting the bulk of the NIL last year, he still produced a top 40 defense. We were just a horse or two shy on that side last year from being good.
