No doubt about it...the 1972 USC Trojans, often viewed as the best of all time along with Nebraska's '71 & '96 squads and/or the 2004 Trojans (by a slight edge, I'm going with the '72 squad).
USC, coached by John McKay, finished the season 12-0 after blowing out Ohio State 42-17 in the Rose Bowl. In the process, the Trojans became the first team to be named No. 1 on every ballot of both the coaches and media polls. Keith Jackson, who's forgotten more about college football than we'll ever know, said the '72 Trojans were the best ever.
Not only were the '72 Trojans the unanimous No. 1 in both polls, but USC's strength of schedule and the dominance it displayed in plowing through its opponents was astounding, if not unprecedented.
The `72 Trojans beat their 12 opponents by an average of almost 28 points per game. Their schedule included six ranked teams --
#4 Nebraska
#15 Stanford
#18 Washington
#14 UCLA
#10 Notre Dame
#3 Ohio State...all of them which USC beat by an average of 20.2 points per game. And, as ESPN pointed out, the '72 Trojans capped the season with a 25-point victory over the Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl.

That I have *SEEN*?
It will be hard to top 2011's defense, ever. It will be hard to top 2012's overall ability.
I would probably say...
1. 2012
2. 2011
3. 2017
4. 2015
5. 2009
6. 1992
Though 1992, the first one I was old enough to know what was going on, will be special. Plus the Teague strip is one of the greatest highlights of all time.

Hard to argue against those two.I just wish UT hadn't choked away their opportunity to play them.Would given the Canes s much better game than Nebraska as would have you guys.
Both Tennessee and Florida would've won that game. But we fricked up and there were no playoffs then.

I would think you would go with the title you didn't have to share with another team.

Easy bro. That Miami team was loaded...more talent than either UF or UT.I just said you'd have given them a better game.

Probably 08 since 2 loss Vandy teams should've beaten us in 96 and 06. The latter is clearly #3 since the offense had problems.

That I've seen in person:
1979-2012(tie)
1978
2011
1992
2009
2015
1973
2017
Had 1992 been more prolific offensively they would be at the top. The 92 defense is probably the best defense organized football ever saw. 8 pts a game. Gave up 6.....yes 6 tds... DURING THE ENTIRE REGULAR SEASON.
Held LA tech to NCAA record .7 yards per play for the game. Led nation in ALL FOUR defensive categories and led nation in defensive tds. We'll never see one like that again.

1992 for me is the best given the upset nature of the win, my family memories about the entire game day, and that it was the first one I was old enough to remember watching.
2009 is the 2nd favorite as it washed away everything between stallings to Saban. Huge relief. Easily the most excited I've ever been throughout a game.
Other years were likely better than those two, but they are my #1 and 2.
2011 would be the next one for me. Dominating defenses, like football is supposed to be.
Bama fans are playing with house money IMO after 2011, so I'm just happy to go along with the ride.
Cant rate the ones I never saw.

1) 1922 - An 8-0-1 squad in the new Southern Conference whose defense was absolutely suffocating. A measly 16 points were scored against the Commodores. Texas managed to score 10 points in their attempted defense of the Texas State Fair but fell 20-10. Tennessee scored 6 points in a failed attempt to earn win number 3 in the rivalry's 20th game. The tie occurred against a 6-0-1 Michigan team.
2) 1921 - The were 7-0-1 with the lone tie against a UGA squad that finished 7-2-1. Only 21 points were scored against the Commodore defense all season, 7 by Georgia and 14 by Kentucky (their first points EVER against the Dores) in a 21-14 Vanderbilt win. The highlight of the season was probably a 20-0 win over Texas at the Texas State Fair in the first of a 7-game series at the Fair.

A “ 2-loss” Vandy team sounds pretty formidable...

a good team but the best team of all time was 1899 Sewanee, check out these guys
quote:
The 1899 Tigers went 12–0, outscoring opponents 322 to 10, and won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) title.
With just 13 players, the team known as the "Iron Men" had a six-day road trip with five shutout wins over Texas A&M, Texas, Tulane, LSU, and Ole Miss. Sportswriter Grantland Rice called the group "the most durable football team I ever saw."[1] The road trip is recalled memorably with the Biblical allusion "...and on the seventh day they rested."[2][3][n 1]
The 11 extra points against Cumberland by Bart Sims is still a school record. The offense was led by Diddy Seibels; the defense by Ormond Simkins.[n 2] John Heisman's Auburn team was the only one even to score on Sewanee.A 16-team playoff to determine the best team in college football history with winners decided by fan votes was run by the College Football Hall of Fame, called the March of the Gridiron Champions. Sewanee, starting at the lowest seed, won the tournament.Sewanee beat such teams as the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers football team and 1961 Alabama Crimson Tide football team.
