Virus affects older people more (NFL players) than younger people (college players). NFL is full steam ahead while college conferences are lining up to cancel the season over a month away.

You want to explain the difference in a 21 year old and 24 year old? Not much

Sure but most NFL players are in their 20s. And a 40 year old isn’t considered “old” either as far as COVID is concerned

The virus doesn’t affect anyone under 50 at any significant levels, despite what CNN tells you.

Still, you have the group with the slightly lower risk in a total panic mode. If health was the true concern, the NFL should be reacting like the college conferences. Money can’t be the true motive, nah.

Because the NFL is a professional league that assumes a contract with players and pays them millions to play.

The NCAA is an amateur sport without contracts or paid players, and universities dont want to take the risk of being sued for the death or disability of an amateur player.

Its all about the money, honey.

Just to be clear, I think both groups should be playing full schedules. Just pointing out the hypocrisy of it all.

a 19 year old La Tech student died this week from Covid 19.

It is a disease that can affect anyone negatively longterm whether you die from it or not.

I do not see SEC football players panicking at all.

NFL is a job. College football is an extracurricular activity. The point was not “let’s only cancel football”. It was based on the discussion of “should all college extracurricular activities be canceled”. Football just happened to be the limelight of it due to the fact that the season would be starting now and it’s popularity (mostly the popularity).

Personally, I see valid points to both sides of the argument. It’s not a decision I would personally want to have to make. It’s true that not having football is going to hurt a lot of schools as well as the surrounding towns and that’s a valid argument in favor of having a season. It’s also true that there is a risk of Covid related illness and possibly deaths if the season is played. Sure, the odds of one of these players actually dying of Covid is very low. But these players have parents and grandparents that they will no doubt also be around who are more susceptible to major illness or death. Sure, you can make the argument that they are going to be in school anyway and could contract it from that alone. That’s a valid argument. But the argument that college is for education and is under no obligation to provide extracurricular activities combined with the fact that schools often close down various extracurricular activities for numerous reasons in any given year is also a valid reason for not having ANY extracurricular activities until this virus is better understood and better controlled.

I’m in the group that thinks a slightly delayed and shorter season is the answer right now. Let’s get these kids back on campus and see how it goes with the safety protocols for that goes for a month or two. If we see no real significant increase in cases, then at that point, play the hell out of some football.

While odds are low I do know of a 9 year old and a 29 year old die in my county. Most others in the age group are not affected much more than they would be over a common cold but it only takes one for huge lawsuits and bad PR is my guess
