It’s called early signing day for a reason. If kids really want to go to a school then wait till the later signing day to pick a school. If a kid is picking a head coach to play for rather than a school then he is probably doing things wrong to begin with.

Funny I don't remember Peter King saying shite when Notre Dame "plundered" Cincinnati to get Brian Kelly.

You think Saban signs the classes he does because of how much kids want to play at Alabama or because they want to play for Nick Saban? Don't be dumb. Very few kids are committing to the school and not the coach. This isn't the 1970s anymore. Saban signs kids from all over the country because they want to come play for him and for national titles, not because of some life long dream to go to school at Alabama.

Not true. Non competes are often used where they shouldn’t be because they are too broad geographically. If it is reasonable geographically they are VERY enforceable. Coaching and recruiting is nationwide.

My last position at a global company I signed one. When I left I was subject to a 5 year non compete. I was paid well for 5 years not to compete. Universities could very easily do a non compete with coaches for a year and compensate them X amount. Must be agreed upon when hired but it is very enforceable.

Can you just have a non compete where coach leaves or is fired and then they can’t coach for a year? No.

Americans are allowed to earn what the market is willing to pay. Now the media wants to deny that right.

And why do you think the transfer portal has been full of Bama players since it began. Kids come for the wrong reason. Bama has 2 converted players playing RB because of guys coming to Bama thinking they will be bad asses and Saban will put them on the field as freshman and they will be in the NFL in 3 years. Only it doesn’t always work out that way. Sometimes you have to be Mac Jones and wait. Any while you wait to play you can get an education. Playing for a coach rather than a school is the wrong way.

yeah, the entire country is not a reasonable geographic. Saying you can't take a job in the same conference is limiting you to a small number of specific jobs. Additionally, those clauses in coaching contracts come with liquidated damages clauses if breached that programs would gladly pay off if they want a coach bad enough just like employment contracts in other fields that sometimes have non-competes. Regardless, there's no way a non-compete could be put in a coaching contract, and enforced, that said a coach couldn't take a head coaching job anywhere else in the country. Coaches would also never agree to sign a contract that had language like that in there, so it's really pointless to discuss.

And if they didn't pay you, there's no way they would have been able to enforce it. I'm also betting it was pretty narrowly tailored and not just "you can't practice your profession anywhere else for 5 years"

This is really about going after the SEC. Former OU coach Riley took nearly everyone OU depends on to have team in a bowl and next year. Not a peep from the media about that, At least ND still has coaches.

Peter King is soooo butt hurt he wants the NCCA to go after universities like LSU, noting "somebody in college football or the NCAA has to look at this...to allow one university to plunder a team's coach

Soooo.... does he want schools to only hire unemployed coaches? Because any coach that is working can’t be “plundered.”

LSU whether on purpose or not, timed this perfectly to minimize the heat. A lot of these media figs are pissed but they can't really say anything when they already condoned Riley to USC

According to the media “it was a beautiful move” by USC to take everyone OU had including recruits.
