I heard the interview, classic fbaum and Pete. Did not provide a single fact. Auburn fans are not scared of Pete.

“I would be stunned if Bruce Pearl is the Auburn coach next year,” Thamel said to the question. “I can’t wrap my mind around the sense that he will be back.”

If he called him in Illinois it is.

quote:

During the 1988–89 basketball season, Pearl, then an assistant coach at Iowa, was at the center of a recruiting scandal involving Illinois. Both Illinois and Iowa were recruiting Deon Thomas, a top high school player from Chicago. Pearl lost this recruiting battle when Thomas committed to Illinois. Thereafter, Pearl called the high school student and recorded a phone conversation with Thomas, which may have been illegal depending on where Pearl originated the call. (Illinois requires prior consent of all participants to monitor or record a phone conversation according to Ill. Rev. Stat. Ch. 38, Sec. 14-2; however, Iowa, where Pearl was coaching at the time, only requires one party's consent to record a phone conversation.) During the conversation, Pearl asked Thomas if he had been offered an SUV and cash by Illinois assistant coach Jimmy Collins, and Thomas seemed to indicate that he had. Pearl then turned over copies of the tapes to the NCAA, accompanied by a memo describing the events. During the subsequent NCAA investigation, Thomas denied the allegations and said the story was false, that he was agreeing with Pearl only to try to get rid of him. Thomas later passed a polygraph test in which he denied Pearl's accusation of Illinois's offering cash and a car. The NCAA did not find Illinois guilty of any wrongdoing relating to Thomas's recruitment, finding that the purported evidence provided was not "credible, persuasive and of a kind on which reasonably prudent persons rely in the conduct of serious affairs.

Thank you. This Bball season has felt as if the rug is about to be pulled from under us, but Pete and Paul trying to use Russian Fake News tactics means Auburn is for real and the people that hate us are scared. #bettertogether

Thomas sued (really Illinois through Thomas) Pearl and Pearl won a summary judgement saying what he did was legal. Thomas appealed and the 7th Circuit also said what Pearl did was legal.

But Wikipedia says maybe it was illegal, so you go with that.

Pete Thamel, you say?

Negative AU news, you say?

I don't believe you.

Exactly. He is all about trolling the SEC at this point.

The guy arguing with Hooks in the comments is hilarious.

Hooks is close to AU BB Program. He has said for a while that AU dodged a bullet by not playing the two players in the FBI Probe. He thinks other schools will have to forfeit some games because of playing ineligible players, but AU is not one of them. He also has been saying that Pearl is free from this issue. Pete Thamel is trying to group Pearl and AU into this matter, but AUs Compliance Dept is going to put egg over Pete's face again.

Why would be calling him in Illinois? As it's already been pointed out, they tried to get Pearl for this. Came out squeaky clean

It was thoroughly satisfying as an AU fan/alum when it all wrapped up. To see the collective fumble around in desperation, misplacing their hopes and desires, ultimately for everything said in that thread to come out as false, making everyone in it look like a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, twas great.

Who care what Pete Thamel thinks . . . sheesh.

Like I mentioned in a previous thread, things are looking up if Pearl is now talking to the school. Him not talking would drive me batty if I was an Alum (not just a fan), especially with how well you're team is doing this year. You want to stick up for your coach, but your school takes first priority - especially with how highly regarded AU has played with the NCAA in the past.

He turned in a cheating program that was illegally paying athletes extravagant gifts and larhe sums of money.
That's the opposite of being a "sleazeball", that's doing the honorable thing and playing by the rules.

I think the only reason you have a problem with it as a Bama fan is because ot reminds you of when Gilmer at UT turnes in Bama's slimy "sleazeball" cheating arse

Bruce Pearl is a man of character and that's been established by hia actions throughout his career going back the very beginning in his days as an assistant

If only they had phone logs to track calls. The reason no charges were pressed was because he called from Iowa where it is legal

Lets also remember what Person did was encourage folks to LEAVE Auburn and go pro. The other schools and shoe companies (Adidas and Nike) are charged with recruiting violations (See Louisville). AAU is dirty as heck.

Actually, the 7th Circuit determined it wouldn't have been a violation of Illinois law even if originated in Illinois. They never said where the call originated from, but it was irrelevant to whether it was legal or not.

I have not heard this. If true, that means the FBI investigation, as far as Auburn goes, is closed. That is the one and only reason that Pearl could not talk to Auburn officials.

There will be an interview airing tomorrow (according to Finebaum) from a guy who had a sit-down with Pearl. Pearl mentioned to him that he has had conversations with the school . . . not sure how many, but some. That is a positive in my view.
