Brian Kelly isn't overrated at all.

Depends on your perspective. ND thinks they should be a contender every year, not just a couple of times every 7 years. Ten wins a year isn't going to do that. So...You may think he's not overrated, but a lot of the ND fanbase does, and wanted him gone as recently as 2017.

IDK if Willie Taggart is exactly overrated

He's 1a with Harbaugh being 1b

Absolutely not. Taggart is bad at coaching football. Even his mom would probably tell you that.

Harbaugh is #1. No question.

They may want somebody better, but I don't even think they'd say he was "overrated". I don't ever see Brian Kelly talked about as one of the elite coaches in college football. He's talked about as a good coach, probably top 10-15? And that's generally where his teams are.

Recruiting Rankings
2014 - #11
2015 - #13
2016 - #15
2017 - #10
2018 - #10
2019 - #16

The guy recruits at a #10-15 level and generally has a #10-15 level football team. Folks may want more from Notre Dame, but that is a different discussion.

Mike Leach is properly rated. He’s a damn good coach. He loses some questionable ones often, but he’s done stuff at Wazzu that hasn’t consistently been done. He’s churning out QBs the same way he did at Texas Tech.

My answers:

Jimbo
David Shaw
Fuente - maybe not overrated anymore

David Shaw definitely gets my vote.

No way, a program wants a coach fired after going 4-8

I would agree with you on that point. I would also throw a couple of other schools in there based on the criteria that you mention. Nebraska is one and Purdue (Layafette, IN) is another. The only thing that Purdue has going for it is the proximity to a huge metro area like Chicago. But the immediate area is a dystopian depressing meth capital. I was actually shocked that Purdue was able to keep Brohm. But they are having a really bad year to this point.

ND doesn't play an ACC schedule in football. Your argument is even stronger than you realize. ;-) Brian Kelly is a good coach.

Kind of like Mark Richt was. Recruited well, underachieved, and generally lost a couple of big games a year..and that's why Richt is now out of coaching.

Yes. The man had a career losing record when FSU jumped all over him because former players wanted him....and now even 'Prime Time' regrets the role he played in bringing Taggart to Tallahassee.

Mark Richt had the greatest recruiting situation in college football. Brian Kelly recruits to a cold weather school that is closer to Stanford and Vanderbilt in terms of kids they can and can't recruit than they are Alabama and LSU. Not even close in terms of reasonable expectations there.

Also - Mark Richt finished ranked outside the top 15 in 6 of his last 8 seasons, and the only one of those last 8 seasons he had any realistic shot at being a national player was 2012.

So, all in all, I'd say Kelly is pretty similar to Mark Richt of 2005-2012.......but without the inherent advantages of getting NFL level players that Richt had.

Reason for that is the school recently build a new sport facility! One of the better ones in the country.

LOL.

Do you know how terrible Wazzu was before Leach arrived?

There was a graphic posted here, I think, last week that showed ND has plenty of 4 and 5 star players to compete against the top teams.

That is absolutely correct, plenty of talent around. But having them qualify academically and convincing them to attend ND is harder than other schools.

I do agree Richt blew a couple of golden opportunities, but he was also snake-bitten.

I think GA runs the regular season table if DJ Shockley doesn't get hurt, and then the year they had Matthew Stafford and were preseason #1, they had to kick like 5 starters off.

Location! That is why he is at a disadvantage over other schools in the PAC. Harder to recruit top players to go there. Just like Missouri. Not top recruiting ground for Missouri to go there and get 4 and 5 stars players. Arky is another one. Got to find the right fit for each school. Coaches that have a connection to the school and can get key recruits and build the program to be a better football team. May never be one of the powerhouse in football. Look at Nebraska? Same thing. It lost the glory days of being a powerhouse school in football. Some may or may not ever come back. Tennessee is another one.
