So was this more of a traditional grocery store or a "grocery-gas station?"

I’ve got to give credit where it is due. Harry Rex Vonner, you started a great thread.
Before my mom and dad passed, we would take 9-10 hour trips to see family in South Carolina. My dad would talk about all the small towns he drove through. The next time we took them to SC, I did not get on I-55. I took the old way to SC. It was a hoot listening to my parents tell me about places they saw that they had not visited since the interstate system was put in. It was a long trip. It was the best trip I’ve ever made.
The pictures that are being posted brought out a lot of great memories.
Thank you.

Hmm well I would have called it a general store I guess that basically had almost everything or would get about everything the people in town needed. The pic I’m not going to post of the front of the store haha has the name on it of course and it’s my ggpas name Company.
Part of that history says that through the week the clerks would take notes of what people wanted that they did not have and my ggpa would be driven to Little Rock on Thursday’s and restock and get the extra stuff people requested. It mentions other more remote stores buying their goods from him too. So maybe general store isn’t quite the right description I don’t know.

Yep
I get on it to go S to 12, E to 10, then N on 95 boom, South Carolina. Edit: If I’m going to the low country. If I’m going mid state or northern, I go N on 55 and go through (around) Atlanta

Nice. Did they sell gasoline and if so,what brand? I'm a big geek about old grocery-gas stations . Love to take the US/Federal HWY if time permits vs the Interstate.

I don’t think or guess they sold gas

I always remember when I was a little kid riding with my Grandpaw on an old Ford 9N tractor to the little country store down the road back in the 60's. We'd go in, get a 6 Oz coke and a bag of peanuts...of course We'd pour peanuts in our Coke. Lot of youngin's in this day and age have never had peanuts in Coke or moon pies and a RC, seems many don't know what they're missing.

That is oldest running restaurant in Arkansas. It opened in the late 1800s.

Rip Cothams (Scott, AR)
Couldn't find pics of Morrow Country Store or the IGA in Biscoe

It could’ve been me in the 70s. We had Lance’s peanuts for the Cokes. Plenty of Moon Pies and RCs on hand too.

Best part of the old stores for me were always the sandwiches. Not subway style but homestyle. Simple bologna and cheese cut to desired thickness after a hard day's work or day of fishing, hunting or golf can't be beat.
Also, the beef Jerky bins and big jar of pickled eggs.
There are a lot of memories attached to those places. Walking across the wooden floors with squeaky joists as you perused for your favorite penny, Nickle, and dime candies.
The randomness of selection always amazed me as well. From tractor/car parts to hardware to groceries and snacks or animal feed, there are too few left
Nice thread. Thanks for the memory jogger

All of these places look like shopping malls compared to the county stores I used to go to in the 50’s and 60’s in Central Alabama. Anyone here ever had a Patomic soda?

St. Gabriel Grocery and Deli just outside Baton Rouge. Bonus, they have a bar/daiquiri shop attached.

The original Cothams is in Scott, Arkansas just outside Little Rock. It made an appearance on man vs. food. The burgers were as large as a hubcap and they would put giant onion rings on top of them. The building was a mercantile but burned down some years ago. However they have a second one that is on Markham in Little Rock.

I know I ate there a few times before it burned
