My understanding is there is an agreement that they get in if they are ranked in the top 12 of the final CFP poll.

If this is true it highlights again how traditional powers, aka blue bloods, get special privileges.

They only win championships when given a head start.

Notre Dame

So, 1 day after the CFP field is announced, Notre Dame already has moved the organization enough to get an agreement like this hammered out and agreed to in some sort of binding way?

According to zero sources?

ETA: Apparently, I am being called by other posters because it’s a real thing. If so, I will stand by the premise that a post like this needs an OP with a source link, and I just like the GIF. That being said, I concede that I may be guilty of excessive snark. It’s not my first time, and highly unlikely to be my last.

This is criminal considering this schedule.

Not really a huge deal IMO…. All teams are effectively assured a spot in the playoff if they finish in the Top10-ish…. So really not that different than the other conferences

They finished 11 this year. They would have been in, meaning one of the SEC teams would have been left out.

It is a huge deal. It would keep them from getting bounced by a DEI G5 team unlike us. Auto bids need to die

The committee will just make them 13th, it's easy to explain that away.....

It was believed the Fighting Irish were pegged for a matchup against BYU, another team not happy

I guess they don't want to be pegged.

Hey BYU, call A&M, they'll beg for it

You mean 2 of the SEC teams would have been left out. Let's not discount that Vandy got screwed more than Notre Dame.

“In an interesting wrinkle, as part of a memorandum of understanding signed by CFP officials last spring, Notre Dame will be assured of making the playoff if it is ranked in the top 12 starting next year, Bevacqua tells Yahoo Sports,” Dellenger wrote.

I'd love to see them try to pretend this is a legally-binding contract.

What's your recourse here ND? Back out of the playoff system completely?

Its ridiculous that notre dame could go 12-0 in the regular season, sit out conference championship weekend and get a first round bye. Everyone else has to play 16-17 games to win a national championship but they can win one only playing 15 games, the same amount most of us were playing to win a national championship in the 4 team playoff era.

Why even make them play any games at all? Just place them in the playoff field every year no matter what they do.

Well, it highlights specifically how NOTRE DAME gets special privileges. I'm not sure how this benefits any other blue blood.

What a bunch of pussies for agreeing to something like this.

The best hypothetical thing that could happen would be for a 10-2 Notre Dame to bump a 10-2 Bama or Ohio State team- just to watch the world burn…

So, this boondoggle of an agreement was reached last spring, but only goes into effect next year?

Makes me wonder if the snub this year was just a big middle finger to Notre Dame from CFP committee members that see that as a shite deal.

If so,…nice.
