The easiest way to fix it is to give it a cap.

The court ruling that created this mess would also prevent capping. Any cap would be preventing the 'student athlete' from receiving a fair market value for their name, image and likeness.

even if his school could pay that much, no kid playing college football is worth that much. this NIL crap is totally out of hand.

They absolutely are worth that much, I know because people are willing to pay it.

The market will correct itself in time. There will be enough misses where boosters are less willing to pony up the cash.

The only path forward (or backward, depending how you look at it) is for several schools, big schools that could still recruit well without NIL, to form some kind of alliance and make their own rules like:

If people buy your jersey with your name on it, you get a cut.

If you show up to an autograph session at a car dealership to drum up business or a business wants to pay you to put your picture on a billboard or have you do a 30 second radio spot, you can be compensated by that business.

If you are a super big shot, and AllState wants to pay you millions to be in a commercial, that's fine too.

All of that is between you, your agent, and the business.

But the school isn't going to pay you a damn penny.

Here's your free tuition, here's your free meal plan, here's your free healthcare, here's your free housing expenses, here's the 55 other free perks. Whatever you think you are worth to the world with your name, image, or likeness, feel free to go explore that.

What we could collectively do to correct this is stop watching. The lack of ratings would force things to change. But that would never happen.

I've quit watching 90% of the college games I use to watch.

Years ago I would watch every game on Thursday night, even crappy teams. I'd watch on Friday nights, Saturdays and then I'd watch reruns of games I missed during the week.

I'd also watch a good bit of the football shows.

I did that for like decades.

These days I'll watch Alabama games and then basically 1 or 2 SEC games on Saturday if it's a decent match up. I mute the announcers most of the time, and you'd have to pay me decent money to watch one of the football shows.

frick ESPN and frick what they are doing to the sport.

I'm sorry but he "heard stuff", he says it's a sad deal, but he won't name names? Anonymous sources and unwillingness to call anyone out accomplishes nothing.

Only a coward says he knows something that's hurting the sport and won't name names.

How is this movement since this is the exact situation we're in today?

The only solution now is you’re going to have make it public knowledge what these players are getting paid and for how long. Stop talking about protecting the fricking kid. He isn’t a kid if he can vote , get drafted to the armed forces and get paid to play a game for a living. If they’re going to be professionals, it has to become known in the public sector what they’re getting paid.

Sure. Start with coaches. Then include facilities.

What ? Doesn't sound so good now ? Of course it doesn't. Every blue-blood school in the SEC loves to pay those coaches. And loves to build those facilities.

But, hey. It's student-athletes, right ? Then surely, say, $500K or so should be sufficient to coach 'em. Or Hell, maybe just let the PE teacher do it - just like in small town high school.

LOL sure did ole 4&8 a lot of good didn’t it. This coming year, will they do any better? Will the not forfeit a bowl game? Tune in again in August to this same website, folks, to see if the 100 million dollar coach can pull a miracle off in Cowards Station and deliver a winning season to the toy soldiers.

Is that fair to players? Basically limits their earnings pool.

Every major league has a salary cap. Not for each player but as a team total.

What court? I am not aware of all the district courts in different states and what may have happened. I know SCOTUS has not made any ruling regarding NIL.

I didn't watch any games in 2020 after all these teams decided to march in support of a domestic terrorist group (BLM) that burned half the nation and also gang attacked multiple people, leaving many injured and some dead...

It wasn't hard to turn off.

No they do not. Baseball doesn't have a salary cap and that isn't the reason baseball sucks.

Risk/reward of making the CFP. The windfall for a university and athletic department is worth it.

Hush your conservative mouth. This is a National Emergency. We have to sign away all of our rights immediately and put this in the hands of the executive branch of government. If we don't act now there will be no football in 2023.

Did you watch in 21 or 22?

Also, you probably stopped watching the NFL like many others but the NFL still dominated in ratings.

Libertarian in principle, “Conservative” for expediency. For as many conservatives as there are on this board, there are a lot of folks that hate free markets.

It’s certainly Bama. They’ve been saying all year they would take him after this year and are desperate for a QB next year
