I like Saban, but he's full of shite on this one.
The NFL comparison isn't valid as the NFL has structure and is a level playing field as far as player acquisition and the salary cap is concerned.
In Saban's final three years he lost whatever advantage he had in recruiting. He couldn't hoard talent and retain depth on his roster - or perhaps I should say he could see that it was going to be an issue.
Free agency 365 days a year. Unlimited transfers. No salary cap.
He didn't want to deal with all of that.

Personally, I think he is full of it. Not that there is anything wrong with it, I think Roy Williams & Coach K also retired before they wanted to because they didn't want to mess with this NIL stuff.
Saban was able to build depth you can't have anymore. As great a coach as he is, he was always someone looking for something extra that others didn't, whether that was more staff, more recruiting "funds", etc... once the NIL came to be and Bama wasn't going to be a top 5 NIL spender, he was done.

He gets paid ridiculous money to "work" 3-4 hours on Saturday mornings in the fall talking football.
That's not exactly head coaching hours. You'd think that would be obvious...but this is the rant.
Saban went out as the SEC champion in 2023. Not a bad way to bookend the greatest dynasty in the history of the sport.
