Stupid idea. I understand wanting to lessen head trauma but the rest of this shite is hurting the integrity of the game

Can't tackle too high, can't tackle too low, now you can't tackle the midsection.

You might as well set a height and weight standard for all skill players on offense that matches the LBs and DBs on defense. What option does a 195 lb CB have against a guy like Derek Henry catching the ball and turning upfield on the perimeter?

I'll caveat this by saying that when I played football in high school I was very undersized but I made up for it by being slow. The only thing I did even above average was taking a good line to the ball carrier-

I can only remember a single tackle I made that wasn't a horse collar or a hip-drop tackle. This was before horse tackles were illegal at any level I'm aware of.

In his defense, he's probably talking about playing football for his Army unit, and while it isn't what anyone would describe as "a high level," it is more physical and better play than say the Georgia Brigade in the Semi-Pro GDFL.

And I am ashamed to say I have actually paid to watch a GDFL semi-pro game.

Technically, they can't, and I think that scenario is even spelled out. But I'm about 100% certain it's never been called.

Can't outside the tackle box.
But I haven't seen it enforced.
Can inside the tackle box.

All of this, you know, because of player safety.

Now who wants to return kickoffs (player safety.. lol)

They might as well. You can't even block anybody anymore.

I get why the tackle can be dangerous toward the runner, but if the runner is bigger and fighting for extra yards then it shouldnt be on the defender for pulling him down. It is no more intuitive for the DB to let the runner go than it is for the RB to call quits once he gets wrapped up.

Stop screwing the defense with extra rules so that the NFL can ruin the game some more.

It's so easy to just look at a photo or one frame of video and say that should be banned.

The game is played at such a high speed. Unless the defense is playing in Matrix-style bullet-time there's no way for these players to make these adjustments on the fly. You'd have to enforce corresponding restrictions on the ball carrier - you can only run north and south, no lowering the shoulder, no stiff arm, no hurdling. Absurd, of course, but it would be the only way a defensive player could even attempt to play by the rules.

So...what's supposed to be a legal tackle?

I was taught "V" of neck/shoulder to hips, wrap arms behind thighs, and lift up and through. Our coaches always emphasized that no one, regardless of size, can advance if their legs aren't free and firmly touching the ground.

Of course that's in a perfect scenario when you're not just trying to grab anything you can.

On a related note, I don't understand how we ever got to the point of defenders leaving their feet and launching their body up into someone's shoulders. It just doesn't make any sense from a leverage standpoint.

There’s no playmaking difference between taking out some of the guy’s brain cells and just getting in his way to allow your runner to go past. Seems like a pretty reasonable rule change.

It’s football. You do what you can to get the player down. Sports decline the more people get involved. As long as it’s a football play I don’t care what happens on that field, even if it causes injuries to another. That’s exactly what it’s supposed to be but we can’t because society is weak. Obviously I don’t agree with face mask and other basic rules that have been in place and taught since the beginning but continuing to make rules is stupid.

They will ask them politely to stop, and if that doesn't work they'll be able to tug on their pinky

The only injuries that the NFL should seek to eliminate via rules changes are injuries to the head and neck bc they can result in devastating, serious, long term disability. Injuries to the knees?! That’s part of tackle football.

Apparently it is a technique that is taught to get larger, stronger runners than the tackler on the ground by pulling the runner's hips down with the tackler's weight, sometimes resulting in the tackler's body laying onto the runner's legs.

We need to stop ruining the sport for “player safety”

These are grown men who chose to play an incredibly fun sport for millions of dollars that carried a risk of injury. They are not babies that need to be cuddled.

You could pay me Dak Prescotts contract and I would literally stand there and let a kickboxer kick my knees in until every ligament was torn and smile all the way to the hospital

Or I played military ball, for the Army, Fort Bragg and the SETAF Geronimos in Vicenza, Italy, both Airborne teams and our Bragg team went undefeated playing mostly black colleges and universities as well as teams from other posts. Then I played in Europe for the Milano Seamen, Georgio Armani's team, a precursor to the WFL. We were European Champions .... we went undefeated against Berlin, Naples, Frankfurt, Rome, Madrid, etc ... a lot of good athletes, a lot of good American athletes who had played major college ball, playing on those teams. There were limits, half the roster.

I suffered a compression fracture of the C5 vertebrae againat Naples ... they had a big RB, played for UCLA, black kid, can't remember his name at the moment, he and I went crown to crown ... he was hurt as well. I ended-up having to have the vertebrae fused . I'm not sure what all he went through afterwards but I heard rumors ... I thought I was paralyzed at first, but I walked off the field. Had the surgery done in Frankfurt.

Not that I intended to tell the story but, since you asked.

Lulz, hahaha ... so I have a stalking fan, one of bitter petty jealousy for a life wasted and poorly lived apparently/obviously.

TheChicotKid ... I actually feel sorry for you young man, for that post and what it indicates. As my life is on the bottom half of the downhill side I hope you find time to live what's left of your miserable jealous existence on this earth to at least to 1/10th of the enjoyment that I have managed, and been blessed, to have lived mine. I've been so fortunate and I am so thankful.

Try getting out of your Mother's basement. Try meeting truly interesting people. Just challenge yourself, get over your fears, live life young man. There's a whole lot more to it than these boards and social media.

Lol .... you wouldn't believe what I did until 4AM this morning and with whom (plural). I'm paying the price now. Lolol

You made my day.
