The buyout is for the protection of both the school and the coach. If the school wants to get rid of the coach before the contract is up, they have to pay the buyout.
If the coach wants to bolt to another job and leave the school looking for a new coach, either the coach or the school he's going to has to pay the buyout to the school he's wanting to leave. So it's a double edge sword. I can see the reason for it, I just don't understand why they are so high.

There are better solutions imo that wouldn't put schools in a position to always have to one up each other with bigger buyouts that they often get held hostage with.
If I'm an AD, I would just raise the salary from the very beginning on a per year basis based on performance each year but I would pick a great coach and would make the annual offer so high that the coach wouldn't need to stress over a buyout in the first place. If he sucks after year two, audios. No buyout drama.
This could set a new precedent that would protect universities from being stuck with terrible coaches like Billy without having to pay them 5 years to a decade worth of salary for a crummy buyout clause just to get rid of him.

If you plucked the setting of Trailer Park Boys out of Nova Scotia and dropped it in east Tennessee, changed everyone's accents from Canadian to hick, and changed Julian's drink from a rum and coke to a whiskey and coke, it would be the perfect representation of the life of your average Vols fan. Dealing drugs and engaging in petty theft, in and out of prison, dreaming that one day if everything works out just right they might be able to move into a double-wide.
