non-profit accounting is kind of a biatch. I'm pretty sure the "endowment" includes money pledged that isn't in the "bank account" yet... Some of the assets are permanently restricted per donor instructions. Some are temporarily restricted. There is a whole lot that goes into it, and most universities probably use the same accounting methods. You gotta dive deep into the books to get an accurate picture of what's coming in and what's going out and what can be used when and how.
