could be wrong but I don't recall them doing that in the Big 12. feels like a relatively new phenomenon

I’ve never seen anyone in the SEC but A&M and Oklahoma give horns down to an opponent who was not Texas. It makes no sense.

As far as I can tell, the SEC just does not have a history of a hand-sign for each team, but it was very common back in the days of the SWC. Aggies. 'horns. Tehc. Hell, even BAYLOR came up with one.
When the SEC had only Aggy with our gig'em sign, it was not a big deal because a thumbs-up (or -down) has other meanings. The hook'em sign is unique, so it is fun to use it, for fans of teams not as familiar with hand-signs.
