Here's my vote: WVU RB Shawne Alston.

As in NCAA v. Alston. As in, NIL knockout blow.

quote:

The Supreme Court's unanimous ruling in the Alston vs NCAA case has far-reaching effects on college athletics and its student-athletes. This landmark decision sanctions athletes to receive payment for the use of their name, picture, and likeness, therefore challenging existing NCAA limits on compensation.

This is 100% the answer. Alston for football, O'Bannon for basketball.

I’m going to try and add something new and not piggyback on some solid answers.

I know it started before Cam Newton, but whoever was the QB/OC combo that got everyone in the shotgun formation. College offenses are almost exclusively running out of the shotgun now.

I don't know who the QB was, but Coach Tater Tot at Auburn seemed like the first to really commit to the read option handoff at the major college level.

Rich Rod wants to fight you. He was running it at Tulane back in the late 90’s and then at WVU with Pat White and Noel Devine.

Hell, I think they just scored on Clemson again

Reggie Ball was the best UGA player of the last 30 years. Don't know about the most influential though.

I always thought the Jeremy Bloom disaster in the early 2000s got the ball really rolling on showing how insane the NCAA was with their rules on amateurism. NCAA basically ended his college football career because he wanted to ski in the Olympics. Didn't get in any prolonged legal fights with the NCAA but that was a huge black eye for the NCAA to take that stance. Wholesome, good looking kid wanted to just represent his country a few years after 9/11 and the NCAA gave him the middle finger.

Depending on the adjective you use for "influential" there are multiple acceptable and indisputable candidates.

Tim Tebow is most certainly deserving to be on the list. he is a consensus "all-timer" found on any list of the greatest of all time in college football.

Michael Sam.

He proved you can get drafted into the NFL only because you suck dicks.

He then proved if you suck dicks and get cut by the NFL. The national media will spew faux outrage and demand that someone sign you.
