Maybe because chicken legs did nothing in the league.

How many RB’s skip leg day?

In no particular order (and including coaches).

Peyton Manning
Charles Barkley
Shaquille O’neal
Joe Namath
Nick Saban
Tim Tebow
Bear Bryant
Eli Manning
Bo Jackson
Herschel Walker

It is very heavily skewed towards football.. i am surprised that a Kentucky basketball player really isn’t even in the conversation.

Bunch of young pups on here. Bryant was huge in his time. Major news, not just sports, story when he retired and then passed away. No current SEC personality is in the same ballpark.

Like it or not, this is what the OP is asking:

Most famous and recognized SEC players of all time.

I'm in my mid-50's, I remember the Bear coaching. If you posted grainy photos of similar old white men not wearing hats or on the sideline, I'm not sure I could pick Bear Bryant out of a lineup. I'd be willing to bet over half this board couldn't.

I can still visualize Joe Namath easily. Shaq and Barkley instantly. Peyton and his fivehead.
Bo... I have a good idea, but you might could fool me with someone like Albert Belle if both were in street clothes (and that's being a fan of both).

Anybody know who Burrow was in 1961 when Bryant won the national title.

Bryant wasn’t a player in 1961 (the point of the thread) Most young people probably don’t know he played at Bama. And a lot of those people who do know are dying off cuz they’re old. . That’s the point. Fame is relative to the times.

The face of college football. Not knowing Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant is akin to struggling with not knowing Babe Ruth, the face of MLB.

This list is really relative to how old you are , ie . the guy who put Livvy Dunne & Paul Skenes on this list —-most recognized at the current moment? —maybe , but All-Time? —not even close .

These are my most famous.
Many of these (coaches especially) wouldn’t be recognized though bc most were in an era where the media wasn’t 24/7–365 , like today, so a lot of people have no idea what they look like even though they know the name.

Shaquille O’Neal
Bo Jackson
Charles Barkley
Joe Namath
Tim Tebow
Bear Bryant—as coach for Bama / Kentucky —as player no. Probably most famous SEC football coach of all time. Maybe known more for his Houndstooth hat than as a coach/player for younger people now.
Peyton Manning
Pistol Pete Maravich
Hershel Walker
John Daly —most probably don’t know he went to Arkansas
John Heisman—as coach for Auburn & Georgia Tech and of course for Trophy Name
Adolph Rupp—Legendary Kentucky B-Ball Coach—Probably most famous SEC B-Ball coach of all time

Not really. Paul "Bear" Bryant is to college football what Babe Ruth is to MLB. The problem is that even in this age of information overload with technology always at our fingertips, we still live among an intellectually illiterate generation. "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

Unfortunately I would be willing to guess there are many under 20 something’s who don’t know who The Bear is or Babe Ruth. With the internet now , you can live in your own information bubble and never have to read/watch about anything outside of it. As you know, In the olden days , you were forced to come across things you may never had any interest in just bc other people were talking about it or it was on tv and you didn’t have many choices for information. Like only 3-4 tv stations and only newspapers / magazines & books from the library or if you were lucky and had books / encyclopedias at home.

I’m not sure I would put Bear Bryant on the level of fame as Elvis.
For college football fans , possibly , but not for the general public.
Only the Super Bowl would come close to me .

It’s amazing how many non sports fans couldn’t tell you one thing about any sports except maybe the Super Bowl (the game and day , as in its on a Sunday in late January/ early Feb. but not anything else about it. A lot of non sports fans just watch it for the half time show and the commercials )

That reminds me of the time I worked with a girl the same age as me,( I’m Gen-X )—who didn’t know who the Doors were. Blew my mind. She knew the Pina Colada song but not Jim Morrison!?

I remember in 3rd grade I had a teacher who was just a huge Bear Bryant fan that she cried in class when he died. That was the first time I’d ever heard of him . I don’t think any other kid knew who he was either but us football/sports fans understood when she explained it to us why she was crying and who he was.

Head coach of the Pittsburg Panthers. Won a natty with Tony Dorsett, who also won a Heisman and rushed for 2150 yards in 1976. Came home as a savior, cause momma called and was stabbed in the back by his so-called buddy, the Great Pumpkin, as he lay in the hospital. That Johnny Majors.

Another loud mouth idiot with no clue what went on.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, stabbed Johnny in the back. Johnny got a fifth of Old Loud Mouth in his belly and threw himself on his own sword.

You don't get to go to a black tie dinner with University admins and mega donors, then get smashed drunk, and curse out everyone in the room. There are repercussions for such behavior. Johnny's repercussions were immediate.

Think Mike Price at the strip club, only at a black tie dinner for the powers that be.

University president, Joe Johnson, had previously warned Johnny about his arrogance and his behavior.
