thank you Commodores for making my longshot prediction come true this year

I grew up in Nashville and as a native Nashvillian , having Vandy in the SEC is a sentimental pick for me. Especially since I lived 10 minutes away from campus .
I remember a restaurant near campus in the late nineties had old football pictures of Vanderbilt during the SIAA days and that’s the first time I realized that they used to be really good since I grew up thinking they always sucked.
They’re my darkhorse pick this year to do better than the talking heads think.
I predict they’ll take down one of the top teams this year.
“‘Vandy, Stanford, GT, other great academic institution with athletics that can't compete, should form their own Ivy League. “

This didn’t age well.

Tech says hold my beer … they just beat Florida State

My favorite Vandy memory is from their 80’s B-Ball team that had Big Will Perdue & a guy named Barry Goheen that made a couple half court shots that won the game for them. I spent many hours shooting ridiculously long shots as a kid thinking I was Barry Goheen.
I remember in 3rd grade I had a teacher who was just a huge Bear Bryant fan that she cried in class when he died. That was the first time I’d ever heard of him . I don’t think any other kid knew who he was either but us football/sports fans understood when she explained it to us why she was crying and who he was.
Unfortunately I would be willing to guess there are many under 20 something’s who don’t know who The Bear is or Babe Ruth. With the internet now , you can live in your own information bubble and never have to read/watch about anything outside of it. As you know, In the olden days , you were forced to come across things you may never had any interest in just bc other people were talking about it or it was on tv and you didn’t have many choices for information. Like only 3-4 tv stations and only newspapers / magazines & books from the library or if you were lucky and had books / encyclopedias at home.

I’m not sure I would put Bear Bryant on the level of fame as Elvis.
For college football fans , possibly , but not for the general public.
Only the Super Bowl would come close to me .

It’s amazing how many non sports fans couldn’t tell you one thing about any sports except maybe the Super Bowl (the game and day , as in its on a Sunday in late January/ early Feb. but not anything else about it. A lot of non sports fans just watch it for the half time show and the commercials )

That reminds me of the time I worked with a girl the same age as me,( I’m Gen-X )—who didn’t know who the Doors were. Blew my mind. She knew the Pina Colada song but not Jim Morrison!?
This list is really relative to how old you are , ie . the guy who put Livvy Dunne & Paul Skenes on this list —-most recognized at the current moment? —maybe , but All-Time? —not even close .

These are my most famous.
Many of these (coaches especially) wouldn’t be recognized though bc most were in an era where the media wasn’t 24/7–365 , like today, so a lot of people have no idea what they look like even though they know the name.

Shaquille O’Neal
Bo Jackson
Charles Barkley
Joe Namath
Tim Tebow
Bear Bryant—as coach for Bama / Kentucky —as player no. Probably most famous SEC football coach of all time. Maybe known more for his Houndstooth hat than as a coach/player for younger people now.
Peyton Manning
Pistol Pete Maravich
Hershel Walker
John Daly —most probably don’t know he went to Arkansas
John Heisman—as coach for Auburn & Georgia Tech and of course for Trophy Name
Adolph Rupp—Legendary Kentucky B-Ball Coach—Probably most famous SEC B-Ball coach of all time

Cracker Barrel Steak N Biscuits was my Kyprotonite. Full order order w/ green beans was my Jam
Meet and Three" has never been on the Wendell's sign but its been on the menus and merchandise for a while now

Yea, I guess you’re right. I just remember some people calling them that but it was just a restaurant where you got country cooking or soul food for most of my friends & family.
If you grew up in Nashville (like I did —1973-2013) and you like Southern food , then you might have heard of the legendary Arnold’s , which was always known as a meat and three . There are original local restaurants in Sylvan park (the old / original Sylvan Park Market) and Charlotte Avenue (Wendell Smith’s) where I grew up that used to advertise on their outside signs that they are a meat and three.
Now Nashville Hot Chicken IS a recent term . Probably started in the 90’s as I recall as I don’t remember it being called that in the 80’s. The locals , especially my black (African American) friends , just called it hot chicken. “Nashville Hot Chicken” caught on as a marketing term .
I’m gonna have to pull your Southern card , you, you, —Yankee!! ;)
BTW , it was always meat loaf, macaroni & cheese & green beans or “greens” (collard greens) for me
This is hilarious , imagine being pumped full of adrenaline, the crowd roaring and it’s 4th & sumthin and when Smokey Dog is eyeing you like this as your trying to get the sack on
However my pa’s gf is a Clemson/ Buckeye lover, so there’s that
All Auburn alums on my pa’s side. No Bama ties tainting the water yet…
There’s no contest between the Cheerleading vs Dance Squads at any University. The Dance squad is hands down the winner to me in terms of looks
I’m ok with USC & Oregon at #1 & 2 . Look, Southern girls are among the prettiest in the world ( I grew up in Nashville & Atlanta) but the “talent” out here in LA is strong. The “Cali” image is still strong in the minds of the youth even today
As Sir Charles Barkley would say—-Tuurriibblle!!
