AD was Dick Tamburo (88-92). By all accounts, a decent guy, but not sure how he stood up and walked around considering he had no spine - at least when it came to standing up for the athletic dept, which was his job after all.

Big 8 referees forgot how to count to 4 and then gifted CU a TD on down 5.

I remember when it happened. The official who granted the fifth down was from Kennett. He was almost run out of town.

Yes but it was the AD that enforced the unrealistic minimum GPA and testing score requirements.

Did they have a choice? No

Babs shoulders the blame for that era inside the AD.

probably but he was also saddled with an AD that intentionally undercut the football program at every turn in order to promote academics.

That's not very SEC like.

No they are not being trolled. I was genuinely interested in finding out what the mood of the fanbase was at that time. I tend to reminisce and reflect on the days of yesteryear

The team that thought taking that sow from Oklahoma was a great move should have had their toenails pulled out. She set fire to the entire AD and bounced out of town in 1987. She rivals Kim Anderson as the worst hire in Mizzou history.

Agreed.

Those were some dark days for Mizzou football, alumni, and fans.

Even this guy understood the importance of the athletic department and especially football, to the university's health and future.

I haven't thought of Woody's Wagon in years!

Mizzou did an ad campaign around it featuring this song. Oooof!

One thing I"ve always wondered about regarding that game...

How aware were the fans in the stadium that it was fifth down.

Did most of them realize it... or were they just as confused as the refs on the field?

I remember that part of the problem was that the down marker guy didn't flip the marker and the refs looked over there and it was showing the wrong down.

Bob was coach during my time at the Zou. Lots of half gatorade/Southern Comfort drank on the Rock M.

Sounds like me in my younger days in the Air Force. Stuck in eastern New Mexico. Smirnoff, sunny delight and fricking the same blonde whore in the dorms that was passed around like a blunt at a party. Fun times

I was the first fan down on the field and to the goal line. I was there the whole series. We knew. We told the sideline ref when it was 3rd down and when it was 4th down and he told us to shut up. But I don't think it really registered with him. And no, his attention wasn't on a guy having a medical emergency as was stated in this video. Ironically it may have been because he was rattled by having the fans so close to the field though we were completely peaceful and pretty well behaved.

The player (Johnson) was actually down before he made it into the end zone on 5th down. It was a pretty clear call that was also missed. The ref who called that play was obscured by the players on the line. I was a little to the right of him and what happened is the player was stopped but as soon as he hit the ground, Mizzou players stopped playing and the guy moved over the line. The ref called the touchdown really late. You can see me in the background pumping my fists in the air and many other kids in that view area celebrating before it was called a touchdown. While the ones near the ref weren't sure what happened.

You can see me in the video here standing behind the ref at the goal line at 1:30:
5th down game.

Was big young fan but was listening intently on the radio play by play. Couldn't in my mind understand the down numbers. Figured at the time I missed something. The broadcast crew didnt have it figured out either

I was amazed Woddy conned someone else into hiring him after the debacle that was his tenure at Mizzou.

And the colorado QB, Johnson, never did score on that fifth fvcking down play. Still’s record was awful, but he was close to breaking through that year.

He was also instrumental in Pinkel taking the job. Pinkel called him and Stull said he could win at Missouri.
