Minimum requirements to be a fan of a college team?

I was born and raised in Baton Rouge. Ever since I can remember I have been exposed to LSU sports. My entire family went to school there and I was accepted, but life made me choose a different rout. I now live in Pensacola, Fl and I am in the middle of the largest melting pot of college sports I have ever seen. There are die hard fans of FSU, UF, AU, Bama, and LSU. However in speaking to many of them, there does not seem to be a real tie in other than possibly bandwagon jumping. So my question is... What, if any, qualifications are required to be a "true" fan of a college team?

Be a fan of the same team for every sport.
No Bama football/Duke basketball or LSU football/UK basketball.

You must be a fan of the school not just the football team.

Stick with the same team no matter how good or bad they are from year to year.

So the opinion thus far is that you don't need a direct tie in to a school (student, resident, etc.)..?

Happy when they win.
Sad when they lose.
Support regardless.

The caveat to that is that, if you are not a graduate (or current student) of the school you are a fan of, you have no claim to its academic prowess, nor are you allowed to denigrate another school's academic prowess (or lack thereof).
For example: if a Texas fan starts denigrating the academics of SEC schools and it turns out that, not only didn't he graduate, but couldn't even get in...(this is what we call a "t-shirt sip")

Bingo.
There's nothing worse around these parts then the Kentucky Basketball then Ohio State/Alabama Football fans.

Shop at WalMart, eat Tyson chicken and never, ever buy Golden Flake chips.

To be a true fan, you must learn no less that 10 good swear words and be able to use them in no less than 8 combinations. It's in the rules.

I'd say if you've sunk as much money into your team as you would've by going to college, then that's just as good. I never attended UA, but by god i've bought enough tickets, shirts, license plates, etc to have funded a tuition or two.

This is my take.
If you're not a graduate, you need to have some pecuniary interest in the university. For example, giving to the alumni association, the athletic foundation, and/or perennially purchasing season tickets to a sport.

I would think at least one tie should be there: you went there, you lived in that state for a substantial amount of time, you're originally from that State, your parents went there, your uncle used to play there etc.
I hate meeting a random Bama fan in Br or North Dakota for that matter, that is obviously only a fan because of their success. Usually can't name a landmark on campus, anyone on the team past the star players, don't know any of the chants.

I don't think there are any requirements to be a "true" fan of a college team. It is more like a culture.
I visited my home town not too long ago, and there were quite a bit more people wearing Oklahoma, and Oklahoma light shirts. That place is starting to go to shite.

This. Drives me crazy when someone roots for a different school in football and men's basketball...
