Would one have to have a connection to the location or the culture ?

A 250 mile radius is equally as important than "in state"

Mormons= BYU
Catholics= Notre Dame

No idea.

Not many people from KY really consider NKY "KY", though.

My brother went to Northern Kentucky University up in Covington Ky. I would consider it Kentucky.

Border cities bred cross pollination.

this is the big one to me

I absolutely cannot stand people who jump team to team while acting as if they are diehard fans.

I hate driving from the Bay to Oxford, especially from Hattiesburg on.

I agree with this.

I was born and raised in the Kansas City area and I adopted the University of Missouri Tigers as my team in the 70's when I was just a small child. I can remember tuning in the Missouri games on my little transistor radio and listening while sitting on the porch.

I loved the teams back then and even through the bad years of the 80's and 90's in football when they stunk I stuck with them always even til today. I remember when I got older on cold nights when I couldn't get good reception on the radio in my house for the football or basketball game I would get in my car and drive closer to the tower so I could listen. I basically read and watch anything related to Missouri because they're the team I root for good or bad. Believe me anyone who stuck by Missouri football through the 80's and 90's and didn't go off and adopt another team is a true fan.

I would have loved to have gone to Mizzou but being a child whose dad died and lived in a home where my mother did all she could to support us I just didn't have the money to get there and things didn't work out for me to go there.

Attendance is irrelevant.

But to be a true fan of a school means you love its teams. And you can only be a true fan of one school in a conference.

If you mix and match your sports and school fandom, you're nothing more than a frontrunner, not a fan.

So am I a true fan of USC because I liked their uniforms, band, and way they ran the ball with White, Allen as a kid and watched them every time I could and still do? Or am I front runner?

I am an Auburn University fan in all sports winning or losing.

I do root for and attend GaTech games though because my dad went there. I would never pull for them over Auburn obviously though and spend very little time actually keeping up with them.
