@KySportsRadio: For those of you asking, the new Mark Stoops deal has no buyout

So Kentucky gets nothing out of this other than showing they have money to spend. Stoops could still be on the first plane out of town free and clear whenever he wants.

Well, of course we have money to spend. I think the basketball coach makes $6M dollars.

And showing that you have money to spend isn't a bad thing. I just watched the press conference with Stoops and the AD. I think paying a HC with a 7-15 career record $3.225M per year over 6 (5.5) years is a pretty strong message.

A buyout has never stopped any coach from leaving a program, ever. It may have made them stick around, probably longer than the coach wanted to.

If the coach doesn't want to be there, he gone. Buyout or no buyout.

I think a lack of a buyout is a strong message from the school to the coach that they believe in what the coach is doing and are putting power in the coach's hands.

Of course a buyout has never stopped a coach from leaving a school. He's not the one that has to pay it. It will however stop schools that have openings from pursuing said coach because they don't want to spend that much.

I think you're overestimating the buyouts in some of these contracts. The only one I can think of that a real deterrent to anyone would be Petrino's at Louisville, to the tune of 10 million dollars the first four years.

Bielema's, for example, was $3M the first year of his contract. It's $2.4M this year and will be $1.8M next year.

Less than one year's salary. Who, exactly, would that deter? Arkansas State?

If nothing else, the University of Kentucky has shown more commitment to football in the last year than I've seen in my entire lifetime, and it's not even close. It's about time we got serious about the pigskin.

So true. Football games are actually fun to attend again.

I think the SEC's rise to dominance has had a trickle-down effect on our program. I don't worry about losing Stoops to a school outside the conference as much as I do to one of the elite teams in-conference. Even there, though, we now have the money to compete for his services.

The 14 coaching jobs in the SEC have to, collectively, be the most sought-after positions in college football. I think every good coach wants a job where he's challenged and the SEC is way above the top of the heap. Of course, they also want external rewards such as lots of money and hot chicks as assistants.

I really like Stoops and think he's the right guy for UK. The AD had to strike now despite the risk that it's too soon. He's energized UK's fanbase and that alone is worth the risk - add in recruiting, some unexpected wins and some hard fought losses that show tons of improvement even in defeat and I don't see how the AD could do anything else than make sure another school thinks twice before going after him.

Sounded like Stoops is all in with the loyalty. Said he is loyal and has learned that from his father. He said he is not looking to leave anytime and feels the commitment from the school and the AD (Mitch).

The numbers according to KSR:

quote:

As for the actual deal, you can find every thing you need to know, short and simple, listed below: — The deal has no buyout. Barnhart said he doesn’t believe in buyouts. He wants coaches who want to be at Kentucky. — Stoops will earn a $250,000 bonus for every win past his sixth each season. So when he wins 10 games in 2015, Mrs. Stoops is getting a brand new car! — The compensation for his final season in the contract went from $2.65 million in 2018 to $4.25 million in 2019. The new guaranteed numbers look like this: $3.25 million, 2015; $3.5 million, 2016; $3.75 million, 2017; $4.0 million, 2018; $4.25 million, 2019. — He will earn $200,000 if UK wins the SEC Championship or plays in a BCS bowl. I will be getting a brand new car if either of those happen, on my own dime. — He will earn another $200,000 if UK wins the National Championship. We will burn several cars, new and old, if that happens.

Wow, I forgot all about the base salary of $400,000.00. The amendment deals with multi-media money only.

From $2.6M in the final year of his contract to $4.25M in the final year. Nice chunk of change there.

Sweet gig for him, but is he really the "guy" for UK? I'm thinking this is like a Butch Jones hire - is pretty good, but not the next level kinda guy.

I think so if Barnhart can hold on to him. He's an Ohio guy and they're the recruiting bed that UK needs to tap into if they're going to have any kind of success recruiting/playing against other SEC schools. Him and his family like the proximity to Ohio for family purposes from all accounts as well. The fact that he has mustered at least 4+ wins out of a group that is largely his recruited freshman and sophomores is impressive. Most fans figured next season would've been the season to see marked improvement so he's ahead of schedule as well.

And I think right now he is just outside of having enough HC experience for a big name like a Michigan to call him. Now should something like Ohio State open up at some point down the road he's as good as gone.

Les Miles circa 2012:

Participate in SEC Champ Game - $100,000
Win SEC Champ Game - $100,000
Participate in bowl game - $100,000
Participate in BCS bowl game (including Natty) - $200,000
Win Natty - $100,000

Honestly not seeing a lot of difference here, other than money for winning more than 7 games.

In case you've missed it, Kentucky has been shite for a long time. I don't have any problem with incentivizing wins past 7. That's all 4 OOC games and at least 3 SEC wins. Get beyond that and Kentucky has taken a significant step forward.
