Just said it on SEC network, so in Spears’ mind that puts Mullen up there with the likes of:
Saban
Meyer
Dabo
Chris Petersen
James Franklin
Dantonio
Jimbo
Gary Patterson
Is Spears a moron or spot on? I put Mullen in the 6-15 range personally

I'd put Mullen in the 12-20 range. Peterson in the 15-20 range.

State has beat LSU 2 out of the past 4 years and going to be 3 out of 5 next year. If he ranks Mullen higher, it's less painful.

6-10. He's pretty good. Everybody thought he was just doing good b/c DAK. 9-11 wins at State is pretty stout.

When I hear his name, this is what comes to my mind. Not a top 5 coach but I think he would be good at a top notch school.

Next year might even be better. State is bringing about everybody back plus more Juco guys plugging in holes at WR. Our other DL should be ready to go by spring ( can't remember the name).

Some coaches do great things because of great players.
And some coaches make players great. Mullen can fit this category. Top 5 is pretty stout. But let Mullen hand pick a diamond in the rough, and he will develop a winner. There may not be 5 coaches in college football better than him at developing QBs.

No doubt Mullen is a very good coach. One of those guys who will win games wherever he goes. Just have to wonder where his ceiling is.

Absolutely he's a top 5 coach. This guy lead Miss State to a number one ranking a few years back. He's a helluva QB developer, his teams are tough, physical, dangerous and just in case anyone is confused he's doing it at Mississippi freaking State!! IMO he's a better x&o's coach than Saban. His classes are not highly rated but he develops them just as good if not better than Chris Peterson.
So heck yeah he is top 5.

For anyone who wants to consider offering him a job anywhere other than a contract extension at MSU I would tell them he is 50-100 level.

Why? Miss St is consistantly overranked and overhyped.
Lots of good coaches out there. You may just have a case of SEC homerism.
