No doubt Mullen is a very good coach. One of those guys who will win games wherever he goes. Just have to wonder where his ceiling is.
It depends what school he's at. At MSU he's probably reached it.
At a school with a NC ceiling he's probably good enough to max them out as well.
Mullen at UT would scare me way more than Gruden.

He’s barely top 5 in the West.

Mullen is about to secure his 3rd 9 win season in 4 years at Mississippi State.
Top 5? Probably not
Top 10-12? I think it's hard to say no

Yeah, it would definitely be interesting seeing what he could do at a school with more prestige and better resources. I find it curious that he hasn't been hired at any of the bigger name schools over the last couple years.

His ego can't get through the door. That was a quote from Miami when they interviewed him.

24, 28, 18, 36 & 24. That is Mississippi States recruiting ranking over the last 5 years. You put that coach in a top 10 recruiting class for a 5 year stretch and he’s bringing some pain to the SEC. so yes, he’s a top 5 coach.

The problem with Mullen that the big name programs would have is that he is a developmental coach. We'll pick up the occasional in-state five star, but for the most part he takes a 3 star player and develops them into good college players (Relf), great college players (Fitzgerald) and future NFL stars (Prescott, Cox).
I would argue that he might not be as successful with a bunch of 4 and 5 star players who aren't willing to be developed.
He's a top 15 paid coach at Mississippi State. State can pay him what anyone else is willing to pay him (no one is offering him $7 mil+ a year). We have nicer facilities than some of the big boys and they are all brand new because we built them for Mullen.
Fan support? I don't think coaches care that much. Less crazies at a place like MSU. He may very well leave, but he has destroyed the idea that you can't win at MSU and we would be a very attractive opening.

He has had Mississippi State very competitive, consistently playing good football, and had Mississippi State ranked number one in the country for a few weeks a little while back. Think about that, Mississippi state was ranked number one in the country in football.
I think this guy is a good coach. If he was at a better program he would be lethal.

Why? Miss St is consistantly overranked and overhyped.
Mississippi State is literally always picked last in the West and unranked to start the year. You are a moron.

You stupid fricks all talking about some kind of ceiling. What stops him from going through it at State. We have better facilities and a better Gameday atmosphere and a nicer stadium than y’all do. Mullen hasn’t reached his ceiling at State yet but when he does...... oh boy it’s going to be a fun day on tRant

I think David Shaw goes on that list.
I'm not totally sold on Franklin. PSU is good, but Joe Morehead (OC) is a big reason.
I think Mullen is easily at least top 10-15. Might prove to be top 5 at a better gig.
I think Currie is gonna do his best to get him to UT. If ATM can't get Jimbo, Dan would be a great fit there too.

He's been selective in jobs he's truly sought. UGA & Miami were two he went after, but Kirby and Richt were locks to get those. Despite the fact that he's well set for next season at MSU, I think he just might make a move to either UT or ATM.

I am thinking this question will be answed in the next few seasons if not next year.
Stars are lining up for a definite uptick at MSU.

Dan Mullen is the beneficiary of low expectations and a weaker than usual SEC. His best season would have gotten guys like Richt and Miles fired at their respective schools.
He is one year removed from a losing season that saw losses to South Alabama, BYU, Kentucky and Arkansas. He also had blowout losses to Alabama and Auburn and a whopping 1-pt win over Miami of Ohio in the St Petersburg Bowl.
Anyone saying Mullin is a Top 5 coach has an incredibly short memory.
