Should've been longer than an hour of commercial time, Pistol's story is too extraordinary and compelling to be confined to a short period of time, hell you could make a 2-hour each 2 episode series describing Pete's days at LSU which corresponded with the ABA's creation and why he was the first professional basketball player to gain a million dollar contract

My CSB moment. He’s buried a few rows over from my grandmother at a cemetery in BR.

I get to my recording to put on as I drift of to sleep, and the first fifteen minutes were preempted by fricking softball. I’ve missed the subsequent recording opportunities this evening.

It just means more

Neither did this guy:

Does that knowledge adversely affect your opinion of his ability?

Derrick was phenomenal. Glad he played his whole pro career for my home team.

Pete talented but, "every kid coming out of Harlem could do what he does with the ball".

Funny thing was just about every black player in the league was jealous of him. Calvin Murphy said he this about him:
Pistol was so head-and-shoulders above the rest of us," said Murphy, who starred in college for Niagara, where he averaged 33.1 points during his career. "I still do TV for the Rockets, and anytime they talk about today’s players and how good they are, I say 'You haven't seen the best.'

"People really don’t understand how good Pistol was. Let’s be real here. We’re talking about a man kind of like (Michael) Jordan. You try to figure out all week how to stop him, and it doesn’t happen.

"People talk about Jordan and his six (NBA championship) rings. I talk about Pistol as an innovator, as a motivator, as a new breed of basketball player.

"They talk about how Magic (Johnson) and (Larry) Bird saved the NBA. They’ve got to put Pistol’s name in there. Long before those two guys, Pistol entertained. When the teams weren’t winning he played on, he kept the fans coming with his brand of ball."

Every time he came at you, it was so different. But he always had a finish. You know the saying 'All roads lead to Rome?' Well, Pistol was the gladiator standing there at the end of his fast breaks.

"I used to tell Pistol almost the same thing every time we played each other. I’d say, 'I don’t care if you get your 50 (points). But don’t you embarrass me in front of my mom and my wife.'

"When you saw Pistol coming at you, you didn’t want to yell 'Help!' too soon, but you were going to yell help."

Averaged over 44 points/game

BEFORE there was a 3-point line

Just insane

I heard an interview once and they asked a reporter, "do you think that Maravich's record of 44 points a game will ever be broken"? He said, "sure...with the 3-point shot, all you have to do is average hitting 15 3-pointers every night for an entire college career. How hard could that be." Then they both laughed.

Yeah until they average in his 3’s before the line was in and he averages somewhere on the order of 57/game. 57.
I believe if they had a 3 point line and there was a 20-35 second shot clock, he owns every NBA Record...
He would have feasted on today’s guards and switching to a bigger 2 wouldn’t have been able to deal with his “handles” like you youngsters. You would have had to play him and never worry about scoring with your 2. Very few teams would be able to do that. Maybe Artest, Mad Max with the Rockets, Elliot with TE spurs. MAYBE they slow him down.

He's one of the true greats of basketball, but you might be overselling exactly how much of his life requires extensive dramatization. We managed to capture Luke Skywalker's interstellar journey from hick farm boy to rebel hero in about 2 hours. Don't try to tell me Pete did more amazing shite than Luke. Just don't.
