This is basically an ESPN argument. ESPN drove the hype for the playoffs. Now they’re driving the hype to expand it in its very first season.

Cut it back to 8.

xpanding the leagues is exactly why all the top teams in conference WONT all be playing each other.

Every team in the SEC other than Texas played a harder schedule than they would’ve otherwise because the conference added OU and Texas.

The only team that was given a gift schedule based on what we knew going into the season was Texas and Kirby called that out last night.

A&M's schedule if Texas and OU had not joined would have had Georgia, Ole Miss, and Alabama on it instead of Florida, Mizzou, and Texas. A&M's schedule was absolutely easier b/c those two joined.

If OU hadn’t melted down it would’ve been close to a wash but congrats I guess?

Everyone else had a harder path.

Alabama had great wins, OM had great wins, SC had a couple of good wins. The problem was they also had some WTF games and lost to teams who were worse than them. There was a lot of immaturity in Bama and Om team. SC I think gets a lot out of the talent they have but they are the least talented team of the three.

SC did not play the top 3 teams in the SEC, and lost to the other two SEC teams above them in the standings.

don't get the push for SC in the playoffs.

think for a 3 loss team to get in, you need a conference title or have 2 wins over playoff teams.

A 3 loss team that didn’t win their conference should NEVER be in.

Well that is certainly going to happen eventually with 12 teams.

Take the best 8 teams period.

You can’t leave out a team who was firmly in before the conference championship games before they lost for a team who was squarely out of the playoff and did not play a game this weekend.
Stop the madness.

I agree with this 100%.

However, Sc got screwed over in week 3 and it's perpetuated itself thru the entire season...

What they established is if you get beat by bad teams you will not be rewarded. I am amazed at how so many Alabama fans can't understand that. If you had been beaten by Georgia and beat either Vanderbilt or Oklahoma you would have been in.

I think it was more influential how 2 of those losses happened. We were simply uncompetitive and you know every committee member was tuned in along with the rest of the country.

It also hurt that all 3 losses were on the road. 1-3 record away from the comforts of home didn’t exactly give the committee confidence that Alabama wouldn’t lay a huge egg @Penn St in a December game. A big reason the committee often seemed to give Bama the edge is they knew with near certainty Bama wouldn’t embarrass them for putting them in.

The committee actually thinks we are the 11th best team.

We got three teams in. That’s not a blow. The conference had its worst year in a long time. We’ll bounce back.

Doing a quick check and not counting bowl losses to the best of my ability:

Less than 3 losses:

4 teams last year
3 teams in 2022
3 teams in 2021
3 teams in 2020
4 teams in 2019

Meanwhile USC would have won the ACC this year and the ACC managed to get in 2 teams while USC sits at home.

College football is trying to build its brand. They want viewers all over the country to watch these games. The expanded playoffs are the answer to SEC fatigue.

We will see if it is successful.

Yeah big OOC matchups will become a thing of the past sadly. If big xii and ACC teams get a pass for playing absolutely nobody and losing to the one or two semi-competent teams that they actually do play, then there is simply no reason for SEC teams to schedule anything more than the 8 conf games and 4 easy OOC. The teams who have an ACC rival can keep that game, and that’s it. It’s actually a sad precedent for college ball.
