Because his floor as a coach has proven to be a 6 seed and his ceiling is the #1 overall seed? His recruiting is elite? His development is elite? His style is elite? The guy is a great college basketball coach. He's worth whatever we need to pay him.
Why isnt every program in America thinking the same thing? Kentucky is currently paying Cal 8.6. Until Self's numbers get updated Cal is the highest in CBB. I dont see Bama being willing to outbid when there are numerous other great coaches that can be had for a fraction of the cost. I'm talking great coaches already in the 3 mm to 5 mm range.

Why would he leave Alabama for kentucky? It's not like you can offer him more money than Alabama can. They can match you dollar for dollar and then throw a million on top of it.
Bless your heart!

Which one of those guys are leaving their current job to come coach at Bama for the same price?
We’d have to exceed the market rate either way. Might as well throw it at Nate, who the fanbase universally loves and is one of the top 1-2 coaches in the conference.

Cal's situation is obviously unique and I'd be pretty shocked if they go out and offer $8.5M to the next guy (especially since they'd be paying Cal that much not to coach since he's said he ain't leaving and taking the $1M ambassador clause thing).
If Kentucky offers $9M or something then yea, I'm guessing we aren't matching. But if we're talking $6-7M, I think we'd absolutely fight to come up with a match number. And that'd be top 3 coach in the country money. But the guy is younger, consistent and has won here already and built something. I think we'd fight with any number outside absurd ranges to keep him. Doesn't mean he'd stay, but we'd do our best to make it hard.

Bama should go after Musselman.

I suspect if we offered Oats, if he left Alabama it wouldn’t be because of the money. I’m sure Alabama could match but my guess is motivation would be beyond that. It’d be to coach a blue blood.
That maybe comes off as pompous but I’d think the same if Alabama came to poach one ours in football.

It doesn't, it's reasonable. And I don't know how he feels about that. Personally, my two biggest fears for losing him are Michigan State and the NBA. He's got a bond with Izzo and it's a great program back in his stomping grounds and Izzo will sell him there. And the NBA rumors are going to pick up significantly given his style of play (and already somewhat have).
I think we all know Alabama's place in the college basketball world. But we'd do whatever possible to convince him to stay.

They building statues for anyone these days? Great coach, but a statue? Really?
Chizik got a statue for his flash in the pan season. Stallings did too. Pearl deserves one because he inherited a top 250 basketball program and turned it into a top 25 program along with conference championships and a final four run.
The NCAA championship season metric is only but one metric.

Stallings went 11-1, 13-0 and 12-1 in a 4 year span. That's a long arse flash.

I don’t think Oats finishes his career at Bama and I think he ends up in the NBA (once the ghost of Doc Rivers and similar stop getting passed around). Just hoping for one magical NCAA tourney run and actual concrete in the ground for a new arena before he leaves. Alabama could be a very attractive job if/when Oats leaves.
Next years’s roster if a couple fringe pro guys stay as upper class (Sears, Nelson, Griffin) combined with promising freshmen like Dioubate and Stevenson and what is on paper maybe Alabama’s best recruiting class ever coming in might be Alabama’s best combo of experience and talent in a long time, maybe ever. Hopefully Oats will want to coach that team.

He got the statue because of the championship. Yes, he was not nearly as much lightning in a bottle than Chizik, and he was a poor example.

Titties, you think Cal is going to give up a clause of $1million/year for his life that hits in March?
Also, Belle is correct…Scott Drew will be the top candidate for the job.

Alabama was apparently a very attractive job when Oats arrived. There were already 4 and 5 stars littering the roster. Bama is already a high floor program that any coaching staff should be able to recruit.

So let me get this straight. Coach Oates went from a no coaching bottom of the barrel turd to Kentucky’s first hope.
