It would be the best hire, on paper, in Mississippi State athletics history. To get a sitting P4 head coach that has won a national championship and has seven College World Series appearances is something I would have thought only LSU and Texas could pull off.

Schloss had seven CWS but no title and a .680 winning percentage
O'Connor has seven CWS, a title and a runner up and a .699 winning percentage.
Johnson had three CWS, a runner up and a .663 winning percentage.

You could make the argument that O'Connor is the best hire of the three. Plus, he was born in Omaha. That's cool.

Anybody reading the WV websites to see what they're saying?

Why would anyone read a "website" from a state that's not involved in any of this?

Not to mention he’s one of the players dogpiling in the statue in front of TD Ameritrade

I will admit, did not think it was a realistic possibility. And 5 years ago perhaps it wouldn’t have been. The changing landscape of college athletics is helping State for once on this one, I think.

He built Virginia from nothing. They had three NCAAT appearances in their history when they hired him. And his track record there speaks for itself.

And hard to believe he only just turned 54, too. He was at UVA for 22 years. And amazingly he’s younger than Chris Lemonis. I never would’ve guessed that.

agreed. it would be a homerun hire and it would mean we are serious. the AD and funding issues make me hopeful it will actually happen.

“If Virginia baseball head coach Brian O’Connor accepts the Mississippi State job, sources tell @On3sports that Wake Forest pitching coach Corey Muscara will be a top candidate to join his staff.”

Great hire

I’ll be honest. Not looking forward to MSU having a good coach, and climbing their way back to the upper tier of SEC baseball. This conference is already hard enough.

His resume on paper is good but what would give me pause as a State fan is he's a Paul Mainieri disciple. Similar philosophies and similar resumes. Mainieri had to have very talented teams to do well at LSU because he had a tendency to overcoach. O'Connor seems the same.

You're right, we should probably pull the offer.

Damn, thought we found the one.

With dominant players able to win dropped in his lap. Any SEC head coach could have won it with that team.

Zero difference in Lemonis winning it all and Orgeron at LSU.

When the championship team left the program collapsed. Hell.. him simply GTFO turned around this season and let us sneak into the post season playing good ball.
From the outside it seemed like the pitching coach and injuries (to pitchers) were Lemonis' downfall. At a program without the success and resume and the impatience that goes with it, he may have turned things around. You can't have multiple lackluster seasons at a place like MSU (baseball) though.

O'Connor is definitely an upgrade.

wow...i think we found an athletic dept more mismanaged than our own. but, if we pull this off, we've done a great deal to right the ship to moving back somewhere near average.

I will give our AD major props if he pulls off this hire

Post-national title, Lemonis was 42-69 in SEC play. Just not remotely good enough to keep going with that. And State gave him a fairly long leash. Was absolutely terrible in 2022 and 2023 and they still kept him around a couple more years.
