What's the story behind many of the Vols being so vocally anti-college baseball? Is there a historical antecedent here?
Tennessee considers themselves a women's basketball school.

The whole concept of the "Big 3" is basically "these are the three college sports that matter." When you are talking cultural relevance (ie "what matters") there is no better metrics than TV ratings or social media mentions. Period.
Sure there are, attendance, for one.

The reality that many fans here don't want to accept is that nationally...
What many of you don't seem to want to accept is that this ISN'T A NATIONAL BOARD.
I'm pretty sure if you totaled up attendance numbers across the entire SEC, but JUST the SEC, you would see: #1. football, #2. Men's basketball, #3. Baseball.
Now if you want to talk about hockey and lacrosse, go to some other regional board, I'm sure those sports rank higher in other parts of the country.

That only tells you how big the venues are for particular sports.

I would argue college baseball fandom isn't even SEC specific. Sure the SEC has a few of the top programs, but half of the SEC sucks so bad at the sport that it is to the level of not caring.
The truth is more obvious- the is a LSU board primarily and LSU fans want to feel like college baseball is important because they as a fanbase put a lot of emphasis on the sport. This LSU fandom is then supported by fans of universities that have shite football programs but good baseball programs (USC, Vandy, etc.), and LSU fans want to extrapolate that to the entire SEC just to feel better about their own personal emphasis.
The way to prove that theory is Florida. UF is good at baseball right now. Really good. And overall their fans don't give a shite because they are good at other sports that matter more. If college baseball was really part of a Big 3 in the SEC then UF fans would care WAY WAY more about this season than they do.
There is nothing wrong with being a college baseball fan. But pretending it is part of some "Big 3" is like when me the Aggy pretends I will see a football national title in my lifetime just because we spent a lot of money on a stadium. People call me out on that delusion just like people like to call out the delusion of Big 3 college baseball fans, because people are assholes.
The SEC Rant official Big 3 is:
1. College football
2. College football recruiting
3. Whatever sport my team is best at

Have you been to Florida's baseball stadium?
No shade. In Florida. I wouldn't go either.

College baseball is about as popular as college softball. Depends on where you are but to the nation as a whole, it isnt a big deal at all. Outside of about 4 or 5 states nobody can tell you who won the baseball championship and those are usually only the ones that were serious contenders. Practically nobody cares.

SPINOFFFFFFF!
What are everyone's number 3s?
Ole Miss: Compliance Gymnastics
Alabama: Actual Gymnastics
Tennessee: Reminiscing
Miss State: Turf Management
Kentucky: Football (basketball are 1 and 2)

I wasn't trying to throw shade on college baseball or any fan base that likes it. Being in the sunny south means that baseball is a perfectly respectable sport. I just wish people could be honest about the actual influence it has in the nation and in the SEC.
Also quite frankly I respect a fanbase like Vandy or USC that likes it because I think it's good for every college to be good at something. Points of pride are important to comradery.

I agree with that. I said in an earlier post in this thread that I don't like people who make it more than it is either.

I saw that, I agree. Lets hug it out.

And thus have failures always said, "Screw success."

Not if you look at actual attendance.
Jesus, could you possibly use more words to say any less?
If you had to pick the 3 most popular sports in the SEC OVERALL, which three would you pick?
I would say:
Football
Basketball
Baseball
quote:
half of the SEC sucks so bad at the sport that it is to the level of not caring.
Is that some sort of criteria?
Don't tell Basketball.

I did pick.
1. College football
2. College football recruiting
3. Whatever your program is good at
Because this is a LSU forum primarily, people want to pretend #3 is baseball for everyone when it's really baseball for like three SEC teams. For A&M #3 would be women's basketball, at Bama its softball, etc.
The only thing that matters ACROSS the SEC is college football. There is no three, only a one and a lot of hubris.

Basketball is a little different because it has a national relevance that cannot be questioned.
With that said, I think in the SEC you can easily say more people follow college football recruiting than basketball of either type.

Well I can look for it. I was referencing a national article. However I do know that , I read once, South Carolina lost $800k each winning the CWS.

The Aubs once used this tack a lot...
It only counts if it happened in my lifetime.
It was funny then and it's still funny to see someone use it. But you're a LSU fan so a certain sport didn't start until 2000...at least you're somewhat consistent in your arbitrariness.

I agree completely. It's a more exciting game to watch and so is women's basketball and volleyball for that matter. Baseball has just never translated to TV as well as other sports (it can be fun to watch at the park but is terrible on tv) and that's especially true for college baseball.

I started the original thread about baseball being #3 and I'm an Alabama alum. Using your criteria I'd claim Golf, Softball or Gymnastics before baseball, as we are national powers in them.
Posted on 6/21/16 at 6:07 pm to Serraneaux
If you look at the rest of the world no-one cares about football (pigskin ball may be a better word, we are the only country that calls football soccer. But that is for another time.) so I could take your logic and apply it to football, but everyone knows that is absurd. Baseball is one of the big 3 in the SEC.
Football is big in the USA nowhere else, baseball is big in the SEC not so much elsewhere.
