Pitt claims two, but 1980 UGA and 1981 Clemson may take issue with it.
EDIT: Actually Pitt doesn’t claim them, but in 80 and 81 various orgs declared them champ. NYT in 1980 is one such case.

It was Johnny Majors who won the national title in 1976 with Matt Cavanaugh at QB and Tony Dorsett at RB. They defeated UGA in the 77 Sugar Bowl.

12 year HC during the height of sec dominance. Made miss state relevant and ranked #1. Went to 4 NY6 bowls. SEC east champ. The guy was good for the conference.

He had Mississippi State ranked as the #1 team in the country at one point this century.

Miss State got that ranking by winning 3 straight games against top 10 ranked opponents early in the season.
Week 4, they beat no. 8 LSU, who was 3-0 having beaten Wisconsin and two scrubs, but finished the season unranked with an 8-5 (4-4) record.
The following game, they beat No. 6 Texas A&M who was 5-0 and had beat South Carolina, Rice, Lamar, SMU and Arkansas. Aggy ultimately finished unranked 8-5 (3-5) that season as well.
Then they beat #2 Auburn, who was 5-0, beating Arkansas, San Jose State, Kanas St, LA Tech, and #15 LSU (who ended up being 8-5 and unranked). Auburn finished the season 8-5 (4-4), ranked #22.
With those 3 wins, they the newly formed CFP selection committee decided they were the #1 team, having put a lot of weight into those 3 wins. Ms State kept that ranking for two more games, beating bad Kentucky and Arkansas teams, before losing to Bama, which led to them losing 3 out of their last for games, including a double digit loss to a high school offense from a nerd school.
Miss State finished outside of the top 10.
Basically, they beat three 8-5 teams in a row before they got exposed and were still ranked in the top #10 and the playoff committee was impressed so decided to make Miss St #1 (plus it was good for ratings for the new weekly playoff show).
Was it a solid accomplishment? Sure. But does beating three 8-5 teams and 2 shitty teams make that accomplishment "legendary" ?
