We finished 11th in 2014 so it was close to top 10.

Finished 12th in 1999, and that should have been a top 10 team but you didn’t have the SEC bias then. 10-2 (6-2) in the SEC West absolutely gets you top 10 today

2018. I'd say we could've beat a few of the teams ahead of us at the end including UCF, Wazzu, and Florida (who we did beat that season)

This list is actually the number of weeks spent at the No. 1 position in the AP poll, not in the top 10.

Thanks for the catch...edited now.

Never - Vandy

Before the AP was ever started (1936), Vanderbilt was named national champions TWICE...1921, 1922...never losing a game in those years.

worth noting that our streak is still current and we will start next year in the top 3 with practically zero chance to lose more than 2 regular season games. So, barring total catastrophe, we will overtake both those UT streaks.

The SEC also just wasn't as good, on average in that era as it is now. The bias exists now because of what the SEC has actually done on the field the last 20 years. 1999, in particular, was just a down year for the league even then. We had a handful of good, not great teams, a handful of awful teams, and not a single elite team, 10-3 Alabama finishing ranked the highest at #8. Regardless, State losing back to back games in November is why they didn't stay and finish in the top 10, and those were the first ranked teams they had played to that point.

Honestly, while the record doesn't really indicate it was, I think the 2000 State team was the best Sherill had down there. Quite a few absolute studs on that defense and two really good running backs and a solid senior QB. That 1999 team, while having a better record, played a ton of really close games and their schedule was easier. That 2000 team also lost two heart-breakers in OT
