In the case of the SEC, it wouldnt make much sense to leave out the runner-up in the conference then put in teams that finished behind them.
This would be asinine:
1st place - Texas - first rd bye
2nd place - Bama - no playoff bid
3rd place - Georgia - home playoff bid
4th place - Ole Miss - playoff bid
5th place - Tennessee - playoff bid
The only time it would make sense would be possibly in the case of the ACC where there were only two teams competing for two spots in the playoffs.

The injury risk alone is not worth it. Why don't the schools just band together and give the SEC office a few million to cancel it.
Because ESPN & FOX Sports make the actual decisions, not Sankey nor school AD’s and chancellors.
It’s just mind baffling to this generation that for decades a conference champion was determined and crowned through the meat-grinder that was a conference schedule. Instead, they whored themselves out for additional millions and installed a conference “Championship” game.
Also, for decades and even continuing to this present season the NCAA has been capable of determining and administering a postseason football championship at every level of play sans the division I level. For Christ’s sake, every state in this country can competently run a high school state championship from 8-man football to 6A…but do$$ar bills ya’ll!

The committee would set an unbelievably bad precedent in year 1 of this format by leaving out the SECCG loser.
A 3 loss team isn't getting in, even if that 3rd loss comes in the SECCG.
The only way the SECCG loser gets in is if Texas is 11-1 and loses to Bama in the SECCG.

Against policy to eliminate conference game loser . A positive or neutral data point ,

I know! Finally get to Atlanta only to get screwed for doing so! Looks like all the stars have to align for us to make it this year, and ironically Ole Miss is glad not to be in the SECCG! What a world!

Kiffin was really shelling out the big bucks. Winning means he might get an offer from a better school.

Which is why the conference championships will soon be a thing of the past.

He could just fake injuries every play if Ole Miss gets in and make it so unbearable to watch the ratings plummet and force the SEC to do away with it. You know, basically the usual game plan

Looks like Josh and UT were so impressed with Lanes strategy they decided to copy it against UGA. One of the worst flops I’ve seen and I’ve seen quite a few. Even the tv commentators said it was a fake

There’s risk but if you win you’re in a good spot. Going and losing totally sucks cause now even if you get in the playoffs you’ve added another likely physical game to a brutal playoff schedule

Bama in it to win it banner history books rings championships 31st

This is a big factor as well, plus you stand the chance of losing some crucial players as well.
Wiling teams sit players out of this game if they are already a shoe in for the playoffs? Is it now a meaningless game?

That’s just shite coaches say because they’re out of the hunt. I can tell out Lane does not want to travel to Columbus/ Eugene or Pennsylvania to play a game in the elements.

If Alabama makes the championship game and loses, they’re in. Any other SEC school loses the championship game, they’re out.

I'm saying they were the best team in the country last year, ran the table in the regular season, lost by 3 in the SEC CG and got left out of the then 4 team playoff.

He’s 100% right per usual. Ole miss doesn’t make it to Atlanta, still has a chance to potentially host, and gets an extra week to get healthy.. meanwhile the loser of the SEC championship likely is eliminated from hosting automatically and has a shorter amount of time to get healthy for the playoffs.
This is setting up the SEC championship as a useless game with a ton of risk without a ton of reward.
