I was reading the board and thought that it must have been a major class.

That looked like a routine play and tackle.

Said the same when I saw it live.

It always seems like the worst injuries are the ones that look the most innocuous. I was at the UGA-Southern game in 2015 where the Southern player was paralyzed, and in real time, at the game, the hit seemed like the most run of the mill thing you’d see in a football game.

I'm guessing that was a blunt cardiac contusion that put him into an arrythmia and cardiac arrest. It's the kind of thing you see in little league baseball and lacrosse on occasion where a ball strikes the precordium. There have been multiple fatalities from this kind of thing over the years in football as well

People have a tendency to forget how hard you are hit when tackling/getting tackled. It could definitely be enough force to cause commotio cordis.

What In the hell is going on? Look at this:

The receiver's shoulder hit Hamlin in the chest. Like the previous post said... cardiac contusion.

This. Just because it looks routine on tv or from the stands doesn’t mean some force wasn’t there.

I’ve heard stories from friends in the medical field about people dying immediately after a minor fender bender. What just a little bit of trauma can do to the wrong spot of the body is a scary thing.

What the hell is going on?

quote:

Gaines Adams was the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft but failed to live up to the hype during his time in Tampa Bay. As a result, he was shipped to the Bears for a second-round draft pick after his sophomore season. Adams suited up just 10 times for Chicago, and did not register a sack. He died of a cardiac arrest due to cardiomyopathy (an enlarged heart) in 2010 at the age of 26.

quote:

Chuck Hughes died of a heart attack in the late stages of a 1971 contest against the division rival Bears. He remains the only player to die during a game in NFL history.
quote:

On the morning of December 26, 2004, Reggie White was rushed from his home in Cornelius, North Carolina, to a nearby hospital in Huntersville, North Carolina, where he was pronounced dead. White had succumbed to cardiac arrhythmia.
quote:

On February 22, 2005, Reggie Roby's son, Julian, found him without a pulse in their Nashville home. The cause of death, although not officially reported, was believed to be a heart attack. He left behind four children and his wife Melissa
quote:

Chris Mims had it all. He was a stud football player who was selected in the first round of the 1992 NFL draft. Mims played in a Super Bowl with the San Diego Chargers. He had fame and fortune, but it all got away from him at the end of his eight-year NFL career. Back in 2008, Mims was found dead in his apartment with the cause of death being an enlarged heart. He was 38

Something's fishy. We've never seen anything like this before.

I could hit you with a closed fist at the right spot and the wrong time and that could happen -- could happen to anyone -- and it doesn't have to be a lot of force. I'm sure he has suffered much worse hits in terms of raw force but in this case it's not all about how much force there was or wasn't. Humans are both incredibly durable and incredibly fragile.

This is obviously a case of the five point palm exploding heart technique being used ... five steps and down you go.

Interesting you posted this here. Do the quotes below seem familiar? They should since you posted them in a different thread just a little earlier.

quote:

I mean it's horrible. But some of you are taking this and anything people may say about it a little too far do t you think?

quote:

I mean we are talking home field advantage here, right? It's a big issue for either team right now. Horrible situation, but I don't think Conci just gives it up like that. Do you? It may be right, wrong or indifferent, but let's not act like this isn't crossing the minds of every coach, owner and staff of Cinci right now.

quote:

I don't know. But I know people like you having a meltdown and shaming people for asking fricking questions about a game that you have no dog in the fight, while you try and shame them for asking questions or giving their views. Get a life.

quote:

And that the question I asked and Dawg Fan inquired about the studio analysts. That's all. You wanted to shame anyone and everyone for asking and observing the situation. You look like a complete douchbag right now. Really.

I have seen this no less than four times in my career. The most devastating was a firework that went off in the wrong direction and hit a seven year old boy, a grandson of my friend, right in the chest. He died despite efforts by his parents.
We are fragile creatures. Your heart is literally hanging by connective tissue in your chest cavity. I have seen car accidents where the sudden stop caused the driver's heart to continue moving forward tearing it loose from the vessels it was attached.
Sadly outside of wearing armor there is no way to totally prevent this type of thing in football where the closing speeds and brute strength of running back colliding with a defender can cause these types of injuries.
Prayers for a a recovery with no long lasting damages.
My biggest concern when I saw it was a fracture of the occipital atlas where the skull connects to the vertebral column. I saw this once in a 27 year old who was playing basketball in the driveway. When he stood up, his neck snapped his spinal cord into. Again despite heroic efforts he did not survive to the hospital.
