What a great show. The voices most of us remember, John Ward (UT), Jack Cristyl(MSU), John Forney(Bama), Jim Fyffe(Aubie), Mick Hubert (UF) and Larry Munson (UGA) were spotlighted. How great to hear some of those calls. My favorite Alabama at USC in 1971 when Bama upset the number one trojans in Los Angeles to open the wishbone era. So many great memories of all these guys. If UGA was playing at night we could pick up the broadcast in East Alabama. My dad being an Aubie was always wondering how UGA was doing so as a kid I listened to Larry Munson along with Jim Fyffe, John Ward and John Forney. Good times.

Best voice ever in the SEC was Caywood

Saw that as well, it was a great show.
There was one announcer from Georgia who was always negative when shite was 50/50.
That would definitely be me.

I still enjoy the radio guys today. Neil Price at State and David Kellum at Ole Miss are very good at their craft (much better than the TV people) and I am sure that some of the other conference schools have good radio guys as well.
But for an older person like me, I have great memories of listening to games on the radio with my Dad back when just a few games were televised.
This is just one example of Jack Cristil (1974 State-Memphis State game). Iconic.
Enjoy!

Amen. Football, basketball, horse racing you name it.
Hold the phone, there's a flag on the play.
Kentucky will be moving from left to right across your radio dial.
Mike Pratt has gone to war on the boards.
The Cats are running!
Ramsey drags tacklers with him.
Hello Everybody, this is Cawood Ledford.
Cawood final signoff after Duke game

Fyffe was incredible. Always knew what was happening, score readily available and never cried like a baby over every call. Eli Gold has improved over the years to just being really bad instead of horrendous.

Have to admit, living in Georgia I used to listen to UGA games just to hear Munson. The goat.

Was John Ferguson even mentioned ???? He had the best voice of them all....
Besides being the Voice of the Tigers in the 60s, 70s and 80s, he also was the Voice of SEC basketball and the Saints for awhile.

Larry Munson was the last guy I heard that basically didn’t use his color commentator at all. He carried the whole broadcast minus sideline reports and brief stat updates.
Nobody does that anymore. Mostly because the majority couldn’t if they tried.

After one of the eggbowls Jack Cristil said " The drive of the game will be my drive back to Tupelo"
The man was a classic

I think that was the 45-0 beat down in 2008.
His drive to Tupelo was the Sonic Drive of the Day.
That game was probably the high point for Houston Nutt at Ole Miss and the low point for State. Though 2009 was a good year for Ole Miss. But since that point State has been very competitive in the conference and the rivalry with Ole Miss has been pretty even as well.
Jack Cristil is definitely a legend. That dry wit and his ability to paint a picture in your mind was unmatched IMO.

Jack Cristil quotes
“He cannot Go!!!”
“Six-one one eighty-seven, Aberdeen”
“Wrap it in Maroon and White”
“Third and one as we will not split half yards”
“Colder than a pawnbrokers heart”
Preceding said during the 1963 Liberty Bowl in PHL when the temperature was about 13 degrees.
Many more but you get picture here. The ole Radio guys were awesome.

Munson apparently had the opposite philosophy, because he used to describe exactly how far it was to the marker.
There was one call in the ‘06 Tech game on the winning drive that he said the ball was “just across the 20 by about an inch the back of the ball and 8 inches the front of the ball. I’m getting technical, but I’m getting superstitious”

Not sure why Caywood got 4 down votes?
Since he grew up with radio and not TV he was old enough to paint the visual picture better than any radio person today. He was also was less of a sunshine pumper and told you how it really was, rarity in todays TV or radio broadcasts. Hard to believe but UK had one of the better media deals early on because Caywood was broadcast out nationally and internationally similar to Armed Forces Radio and Westwood One today. Seems I remember major media like Time and Newsweek covering his retirement.

If you are down voting I feel sure you never heard him as he was a well respected sports guy across the USA.

Cawood Ledford was inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987. He won three Eclipse Awards for outstanding coverage of thoroughbred racing. He was also named Kentucky's Sportscaster of the Year a record 22 times.
Ledford is generally considered among the finest play-by-play commentators in the history of American sports broadcasting and is highly esteemed by his peers. In the 2021 SEC Storied film "More Than a Voice" an SEC broadcaster quoted the University of Tennessee's longtime play-by-play announcer John Ward who felt that Ledford was the greatest play-by-play announcer in the history of broadcasting. The broadcaster spoke for his colleagues in saying that if one were forced to choose just one broadcaster to call a game, Ledford was the choice

If you’re a fan of UGA, your heart pumped when Larry spoke. He was more passionate about his team than any broadcaster I’ve ever heard. There will never be another.
