re: Joining a Conference will kill Notre Dame as a National Brand

Notre Dame is a National brand because it recruits its non athlete students pretty much equally from every state. So they have good sized alumni bases everywhere. This reach is why it was lucrative for NBC to show all the Notre Dame games and do so for at least the last 30 years.
Notre Dame wants the perks of being independent without any of the pitfalls. Everyone else is sacrificing some of the traditions that made college football great to be competitive in the new model.

What a mound of illogical doggerel. This post makes no sense...at all. Laughably absurd.

I think the question should be reversed...Why is ND scheduling two of its three discretionary games against the SEC. Arkansas was a waste of time and no competition (56-13). Result would have probably been similar against all but the SEC's top tier teams. Tx A&M was near peer...highly respect their program and fanbase. Game was back-and-forth; it could have gone either. Games planned against Texas (2), AL (2), Aub (2), and Ark (1) probably in jeopardy due to hose job UT got this year by playing Ohio St.

Yes, and I'm still PO'd Florida State was selected #1 and my team finished #2 when we beat them head-to-head during the 1993 season. Where was all my support then?

That's not nice. Take your prozac and calm down.

look at the roster
I didn't catch Kirby's interview, but of course schools in the SEC have more local talent on their rosters as more top talent comes from states in the SEC footprint than most other regions (including all but 1 of the states you listed). The one state you list not in the SEC footprint is CA. According to chatgpt AI, which I'm not sure I fully trust but I don't have time to do a full analysis - (maybe someone at ND can given their season is over) I see the following...Bama has 12 players, ND has 8, GA has 6 and Tx has 8 players from Cali.

California has some of the best high school teams in the country, especially parochial schools like Mater Dei, De La Salle, St John Bosco, and Cathedral Catholic. In TX, public schools rule and parochial schools are basically a non-factor in football.

Since 1993? Bama has won 6 Nattys since then. And lost 3 or 4 more. Y'all are as irrelevant as any group of 5 team since then.

Bama was a beast. Best coaches, best talent and best facilities. NIL and the portal has evened the playing field and no longer are players willing to ride the pine to win a ring when they can move and get paid. I don't think we will see another dynasty like Bama anytime soon...just hope Bama fans understand the new landscape and adjust their expectations.

Stanford is in the ACC.
Purdue is not a historical game for ND. They've played Purdue three times since 2015.
Given that fact, ND could join the ACC and play a full conference schedule with Stanford as a permanent opponent.
The could have USC as a permanent OOC opponent (like GT does with UGA, FSU does with UF or Louisville does with UK).
With the two remaining OOC games they could play one OOC game of note and one military academy (mostly Navy).
ND can easily slide into the ACC. This year they'd have lost all but one of the games against Arkansas, A&M, Purdue and Boise State and added 3 ACC games. They already played 6 ACC teams this past year, Dropping Arkansas, Purdue and Boise State to add Duke, VT and SMU doesn't impact their schedule at all in terms of toughness or historical significance.

ND brand has been hurt greatly over the years, and they have been independent the entire time. Truthfully, they just do not have the national following that they used to. Joining a conference would change nothing other than them actually having to play a real schedule for once...

171 downvotes on OP?
Is this the most disliked thread of all time?

Small sample size, but it does validate the SEC's hatred for Notre Dame. I think most of the downvotes were from GA fans still mad from last year's ouster in the CFP.

Absolutely right. They’ve made their living playing middle class old brands. They avoid the 5 big dogs on any given year that an SEC schedule has. There’s always 5 teams that are formidable who run out equal or greater talent. ND begins every year having better or equal talent to every team but maybe 1.

Somehow I am starting to loathe Notre Dame more than any other school even SEC ones. What an absolute crock of shite.
