But I respect him for knowing his financial limitations and walking away from Fishers price tag.
The Florida state football program was, and still is, in a death spiral. It made absolutely no sense to pay jimbo that money considering the circumstances.

Death spiral in 2016? Really?

Look at it in terms of overall staff budget rather than salary of the Head Coach. LSU rightly refused to pay Saban -type long term money for Jimbo Fisher. And they refused to get into a bidding war over Herman . Both for the simple reason that their backup strategy was to hire Coach O on the cheap and then allow him to pay coordinators the highest salaries in the country, and hire an army of analysts and other support staff. Remember, the issue at LSU than and always was primarily QB play and offensive system stagnation- and the OC can fix that as easily as a head coach. And at that moment Kiffin was all in with Orgeron provided he didn’t get a head gig.
Bottom line -LSU was not going to overpay for a Coach when they had Coach O in the pocket. And all three schools look like they actually made the correct hire for their culture as all are on the upswing.LSU from a program standpoint is in our best position ever possibly with recruiting, facilities, branding, etc. I’d say look at the records of all three at the end of the this season and again at the end of next season and see which of the three made the best hire. I wouldn’t bet against Orgeron either because this is IT for him. This IS his legacy- there is no next stop. This is his state, his people.
Not disagreeing with any or this. Just think it was a bad look overall for the program and it made us look weak in our efforts. I don't want LSU thought of as the little brother to anyone. If O was Alleva's guy why even flirt with Herman. Say he is your guy and be the AD. That's all I'm not an O hater and want him to bring this team to glory and you know what to give the man credit he has improved every year he's had the full job and continues to do so.

It was a BOTCHED coating search. Not professional at all. It was reflective of Aleeva’s Overall bureaucratic approach. Aggie and Longhorn went out and got their guy like bosses. LSU kind of limped into a hiring.
All that said, as I said then, it had a certain logic to it. And it might have been unbelievably fortuitous for LSU. In other words the coaching search was like a monkey fricking a football, but the actual hire worked out in the end. Like finding the diamond under your feet.

“I was rolling, baby, playing Born on the Bayou, windows open,” Orgeron says. “I get there at 7:29. Joe is sitting in front of the Tiger (statue), right there. He says, ‘Well, you want the job or not?’ I took him and bear hugged him and he said, ‘Put me down, you big son of a gun!’”
Don't know about the rest of the story, but I can't help but believe this part is 100% the way it went down. Say what you want about his coaching acumen (and as an AU fan I can't say shite) but you gotta love a guy who loves what he does and where he's doing it as much as this.

Shhh. Let them figure it out on their own.

I never wanted jimbo. During his tenure at Florida state both Miami and Florida were down. Not to mention Georgia was down as well. He had the recruiting grounds to himself. And he managed one championship. A championship with a quarterback with incredibly questionable ethics whom grew up in nick saban’s back yard, and never got an offer from him. A championship against a luck driven Auburn team who was quarterbacked by a safety. And he barely beat them. The most important reason for not hiring jimbo was how he fared against bama in the opening game a few years ago. That was the most lopsided game I’ve ever seen. Florida state looked like a sun belt team. But that was jimbo’s team. A team he’d spent years building. It was his and his alone, so the excuse for that embarrassing loss, and the subsequent destruction of the once proud Florida State football program fall on jimbo’s shoulders alone.

This is a silly statement, they first got humiliated and were a national laughing stock by getting turned down by 8 coaches before hiring Charlie strong. Because of this national embarrassment they quietly got turned down 2 times and then told Herman’s agent they would pay whatever it took
That’s called pathetic if you ask me, I respect what alleva did more

I don’t know why that’s funny...y’all paid that enormous contract to a coach who was running FSU into the ground...without a bidding war...
Disclaimer: I’m a Jimbo fan, but I thought the only reason he got that number was to keep us from getting him. If he got that without other options it’s just stupid.

I may be in the LSU message board minority, but I wanted nothing to do with Fisher. 2015 or 2016. No thanks.

Kiffin absolutely would have come if he didn't get the HC gig. He HATES Saban (it's mutual), and he would have done anything to stick it to him. As it is, Kiffin still gave O a bunch of info on Saban, including how Saban runs the statisticians, and O went out and hired a bunch (I think I read he even took a cut in salary? or took less in the negotiations, in order to secure those positions).
That having been said, and while I certainly appreciate any help Kiffin gave to CEO, I hate Kiffin. I think he's an immature handjob, and I'm glad he went somewhere else.

I admit...I think he's cheating his arse off on the recruiting trail).
He’s been in the game a while and was known as a great recruiter before he came here. Not saying it isn’t possible but I’d lean towards him just being a likable guy.

What was Holgerson's off the field trouble referenced in the article?

Our coaching search was a hot mess. It was completely gutless in my opinion. One of the reasons we will never compete for national championships on a consistent basis. Glad to have Coach O but this was a horrendous way to hire a head coach.

I hated Alleva because he was trying to run Will Wade off. Wade is the best thing to happen to LSU basketball in decades
