Do we still think he just opted out two weeks before the season? So the agent issues rumored weren’t the real reason he and UGA parted ways?

Rumors of Kirby not giving a black QB a fair shot and preferring a good ole boy were also prevalent. Everyone that’s signed with him has transferred.

You cannot exclude an entire season of play when these NFL scouts need that to determine your value to their team.

Off the top of my head... Trey Lance, Penei Sewell, Micah Parsons, Rashawn Slater, and Chase all opted out in 2020 and went in the top 15. This will be a new trend moving forward if you already have enough film for scouts.

Some guys actually fell in the draft because of their play in 2020. Example: CB Shuan Wade from Ohio St was pretty much a 1st round lock before going into the 2020 season. Didnt have to play a down anymore. He initially opted out and decided to play after the Big 10 announced their late start. He struggled in 6-7 games and fell to the 5th round.

Nice to see Smokey one again. One of the regulars in UGA threads and a true expert in all things Kirby.

Newman not only quit on his original team for greener pastures but then quit on that new team. The whole idea of Newman rising up the draft board was that he would be surrounded by better talent, play in a system that would showcase his abilities, have better support staff and facilities to work in, etc.

He gave all of that up because his personal QB coach told him to not risk getting COVID and bail and it hit him in the arse in a major way

I'm just curious, any UGA fans, looking back on the way things turned-out and how Daniels eventually developed, are you glad he sat out like he did? Would him playing one year have gotten you any further and would it have set Daniels back?

I’m glad he never played for UGA. He clearly lacked what was needed to lead our team, probably any team, to a championship.

Hindsight being what it is, I think we are in an undoubtedly better position moving forward than if Daniels wasn’t here and Newman had started. Maybe we get into the CFP last year with Newman but then we are probably starting Beck or Vandagriff in 2021. At least now we not only have a really good squad for 2021 (and the rare leg up on Bama and Clemson in QB seniority) but some opportunity to develop the rest of the QB room for 2022 and beyond

Hurt us last year but helps us for this year.

Wasn't Daniels coming anyway though, like even before Newman opted out?

How does Newman starting have any effect on Daniels then?

Yes but no telling if he ends up being the Daniels we know if Newman had stayed. More likely he ends up being an unknown commodity coming off a knee injury with maybe some mop up duty. Now we have an entrenched starter and team leader

Not sure it makes any difference.

If Daniels is actually good, he would've done all of that during the offseason.

Not necessarily. Daniels wasn’t even our starter in 2020 until Mathis and Bennett tanked and it forced him into action before he was maybe mentally comfortable with his knee. He knocked a lot of rust off on 2020 and it showed in spring practices; his mechanics are much better now, he has rapport on and off the field with his teammates (he rubbed a lot of guys the wrong way last summer and early in the Fall), he’s the dude and everyone else is just working on improving to be #2 and compete to be the guy for 2022z

Transferred and opted out into a UDFA contract. Amazing mentorship to all the adults involved in that 8 months of his life.
