This happens a lot. A couple of teams talked to him about drafting him in the 7-8th and he said he's returning to school. Teams don't like wasting picks on players that aren't signing.

He's an awesome college player but he just doesn't have the measurables that pro scouts drool over
I don't think we're at opposing viewpoints here. He knows he's not that high on MLB boards

Thought you were talking about Jim Dandy Mangrum.

Sure it happens, but not very often for a top 10 round pick that is a junior with no leverage moving forward. I don't think he was ever going to get drafted in the first 10 rounds.

That is what you call a college player playing for the love of the game and not draft money
What a dumb, homer post. can he not love the game of baseball while playing 162+ games, or does he only get to love baseball while playing college ball?

Mangum is one of those guys who does not fit the pro model because he is not big enough , strong enough but he is a gamer.
He will make some MLB team a tremendous pro player in a few years. For whatever reasons the pro scouts look at sterile measurements with players and completely discount the intangibles that one brings to the field and plate.
He is a great fielder, puts the ball in play, Cohen noted the other night that he can hit HR’s but does not because his role is to get on base.
I am glad he is on our team.

Mangum reminds me a lot of Taylor Dugas from Alabama.

Yeah. She looks trashy.
She married former Bama player John Mangum who went into finance after an NFL career.

You’re aware every expert mocked him 4-6th round right? State fans were real suprised he went so late.
Him telling teams is the only logical reason.

Mangum would not have turned down 4th round money

Why not? Just because you would not doesn’t mean he would not. Hate this notion everyone on this board has that everything is about money.
To a lot of people there is more to life than $$$$$.

In a sport like baseball where 99% of players never make it to the majors, then yeah money is definitely important. When your signing bonus goes from $1.5MM to $10k, then yeah money is definitely important. Mangum can always get his degree in the offseason, but it is the difference of having essentially no signing bonus and making minimum wage in the minors to getting a signing bonus worth enough to tide you over if baseball doesn't ultimately work out. It's called making a career decision. If he wants to maximize his career potential, you just don't turn down that kind of money your junior season.

Well we'll just disagree then. MLB had him as #180.

No, he turned down 7th round money though.

Magnum reminds me of a quicker, switch hitting version of Tony Gwynn.

It's funny how MLB is stuck on their slot limits for players and positions. Adam Frazier was a 6th rounder in 2013 and made the Show by 2016. Played SS at State and has played a lot of OF for Pittsburgh. Mangum is every bit the bat that Frazier was, but since he's an OF he needs to be taller and hit for more power. I think Jake hits a few more HRs next year, because he can. Still won't help his leverage with contract negotiations, but may get him selected a few rounds higher.

Jake Mangum was drafted in the 32nd round and was the 950th pick.
That's why he's coming back.
fricking derp.

Zach Watson was a Baseball America top 30 college prospect and top 100 prospect overall. He was drafted in the 40th round. Zach Watson wanted to go pro. But he was a draft eligible sophomore who will still have leverage next year as a junior, so naturally he's going to return. These publications are a nice guide but the MLB draft is very unpredictable.

He'll probably be a top 5-10 round pick which is typically littered with college seniors who won't get paid but peanuts on their signing bonuses. For instance, Kramer Robertson was drafted in the 32nd round in 2016 as a junior. He was offered $250k to sign. He turned it down to return to LSU. He was drafted in the 4th round after his senior season last year but was offered only $150k, so even though he jumped up 26 rounds in the draft, his signing bonus was $100k less than it was the year prior.
