It's a two way street. Money is not a factor for the Mangum family. His dad owns a large Finance company, CAPTRUST that he will likely have a large hand in when his playing days are over. Jake didn't think the money was big enough to pass up his senior year of college so he is coming back. Pretty much the gist of it.

The money was practically nothing by the time he was called, I believe that's the real issue here, not that his parents are loaded, generally speaking, most folks try and make a name for themselves, and if offered millions to do so, they take it (regardless of how rich said parents are). In this case, he got an offer for well under $200k, and he passed, which is pretty understandable as that's not much at all. As a senior people still sometimes get $150k offers, so he probably isn't losing much money at all anyways from a sub $200k offer.

People forget this is just a 1 time signing bonus money. Then you get paid really crappy minor league salary until you get close to the show.
You know how much $150k is after taxes? A lot less. You know how much the AVERAGE monthly salary is for a short season, low "A" or high "A" minor leaguer? $1,100-$1,500 (A MONTH).
AA starts at $1,700 a month
AAA starts at $2,150 a month.
They make peanuts in the minors generally speaking, so signing bonus is everything just to live basically for years until you quit or make the show. I know some people could make $150k up front and $15-$25k/year "work" for 3-4 years, but its certainly not really worth leaving the comfort of college your last year there. Imagine the guys putting in 5-6 years to try and get to the show on that...

The money being offered wasn't a factor. If he was offered $500K+ it would have been a factor
