The reason we're here and what we love is gone. The NFL just got some real competition. Amateurism is no longer a real thing. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G must be associated with "pay". The USFL HA! The WFL HA! Arena Football League HA! Alabama can pay more than the USFL. Hell - East Carolina can probably pay more than the USFL. 14 year old high school freshman will be negotiating million dollar college football & basketball scholarship deals tofrickingmorrow.

eta - And every kid committed or currently on scholarship will sue their school & the NCAA to be released from their current commitments to pursue their CASH options in the new College Sports Professional Marketplace.

Who the frick cares about amateurism? Besides, everything has been and always be about pay anyway. Even ignoring the fact that most of the players on teams worth a shite are probably getting paid already, players choose where to go primarily off of which teams have the best facilities and give them the best chance to go to the NFL. You know which schools have the best facilities? That's right, the ones with most dollars to spend.

The real problem with college football is that no one cares anymore. The only reason that Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State pull the highest recruiting classes every year is not because they have the best chance to win a championship, but because they put the most players in the NFL and have the biggest brands in the sport right now (Just look at Georgia). 4 and 5 star recruits don't care about championships, and why should they? This sport has been broken for a while - but fans of very competitive teams are late to see it.

The fact that so many posters here are melting over a unanimous decision by one of the most legally conservative supreme courts in a long time shows how out of touch with reality so many of you are.

So you believe the NCAA should be exempt from US Antitrust Law?

To be clear, this doesn’t kill college sports. This is the SCOTUS all but telling the NCAA that they’ve been operating off a faulty, hackneyed premise for years and that they should have been proactive and addressed this issue 15-20 years ago when tv money began to really change things. What will kill college sports is the inevitable ineffective response by the NCAA to this ruling. They’ve already painted themselves into a corner with lawsuits.

If you want to point a finger at what exactly has changed College sports for the worse, you can do so at conference expansion and realignment (killed the regionalism of the sport which is what made it special to begin with), the never ending search for more money spurred on by TV contracts and the greed of colleges (diluted the regular season with a saturated market of bowls and playoff expansion), and the NCAA’s (ie the college’s) unwillingness to see the forest for the trees as far back as the Jeremy Bloom case and make some provisions for students to capitalize on their NIL.

Instead, we have all of this now crashing down at once and there isn’t a person in the room full of college presidents, ADs, and Mark Emmert’s idiot arse who is apparently equipped or capable to unfrick the situation.

It will be kind of interesting to watch in my opinion.

It was just a matter of time, anyway, till the tired old idea of amateurism was addressed, whether it was like this or a minor league for the NFL, and may still come to that.

Another problem has been the 1 and done rule in college basketball and this new G league giving kids the option to skip college all together. High school sports will suffer because more kids will opt out of their senior seasons to avoid injury to get paid. Had the NCAA allowed kids to have a little walking around money on top of their scholarships would this have happened? The good news will be the UCFs of the world won't be able to compete and the power 5 schools will further the gap between the contenders and pretenders. Nobody knows what the ripple effects will be from this but it won't be good. Unless us fans get sick enough of it to completely stop watching and all the money the kids want a piece of dries up this is probably just the beginning

So, when do these "benefits" become taxable income in the eyes of the IRS? In-state students pay about $32,000/year to attend UT, out-of-state students about $50,000/year.
LINK /
Athletes, especially football and basketball players reap significantly more benefits than the average student, so what value should be applied to that? If you're talking about paying athletes, the IRS looks at the entire pay package including benefits. Is that really a can of worms students want to open?

And if the NCAA is running a business that pays employees, what’s the incentive to limit players to 4 years of eligibility?

Say for example Tank Williams gets a multi-million dollar deal with Auburn plus endorsements. He can secure his starting spot for a decade or take a chance in the NFL where he might play a few years, face heavy competition, and potentially lose out on earning potential over time.

I can't imagine any kid getting that much in college. NFL would raise the salaries, then colleges will. Ticket prices will sky rocket. People quit going. People quit watching. Then what? Problem is people like me won't stop watching so it will keep going

Exactly this. Amateurism has been dying for decades, and it isn't the players or SCOTUS who have been killing it. It is the huge TV contracts which have turned college athletics from a mildly profitable collegiate activity into a multi-billion dollar enterprise. You just can't make that much money and keep people convinced it is an amateur product.

By the way, it wasn't Breyer or Sotomayor who penned this opinion, but rather Gorsuch and Kavanaugh (concurring). These guys aren't the "woke mob," but even they can see college athletics for what it is.

The truth of the matter is that the universities can no longer delay the inevitable. They must either end (or, at least, significantly alter) their version of amateurism, or they need to work with the NFL to establish a professional minor league for guys only interested in going to the NFL, purposefully dilute their product to reduce interest, get the big money out of the game, and go back to having college football being an amateur sport played by college students.

And the gender equity sports will sue to get their fair share as well. You already see it with the NCAA women's tourney complaints as well as the WCWS complaining. They will demand equal pay and lawsuits will come from that as well.
If this means ticket increases across all sports especially football you can count this fan out!
I can find other ways to spend my entertainment dollar. I learned that during the pandemic.
