I think he is a good coach, but he always makes it about him and not the program. Can never just shut up and coach. Spends more time focusing on off the field stuff and wanting the attention on him.
Put a muzzle on him when not on the field, give him time to build the roster and I think LSU could be one of the elite teams. He took Ole Miss to the next level no reason to think he could not do the same for LSU.

He’s an excellent X & Os offensive coach with self destructive tendencies. But at this point in his career, he’s basically been a gatekeeper coach. One that challenges but never really beats the contenders. True contenders regularly beat his teams while pretenders get exposed by him.

Larry Coker, Gene Chizik, and Ed Orgeron all had great runs, as well, following other coaches.
Pete Golding has done phenomenally maintaining the program, but the Golding era for all intents and purposes doesn’t officially start until next season with no Trinidad.
Will be interesting to watch how Keith Carter handles any potential extension talk should Ole Miss make playoffs again.

It's a 50 million dollar roster, I'd be a little upset especially after last weeks performance against La Tech, QB has 5 picks already...he's a good coach..but he doesn't have the excuse of rebuilding like he did at Ole Miss. He has everything he asked for including no instate competition for recruiting. No excuses for this team not to be better.

He may yet go on to have championship teams at LSU, but ultimately, I think he will always get in his own way somehow.
If I were the AD for an elite program, he would not be on my list of candidates.
I could see the appeal if I were the AD that needed someone to breath life into the program, but you’d have to accept the drama and weigh that against the results.

FAU was a disaster before and after Lane (best coach in their history)
Ole Miss was a disaster before Lane (after tbd). Tied for the best coach in their history with the individual the stadium is named after.
Tennessee had one of the worse stretches in SEC history after he left.
The athletic did a deep dive on his resume - using win percentage of the coaches before /after and he was #2, after Cignetti with Kirby Smart #3

Yeah he's a good coach, but so what. This sport is replete with "good" coaches. The question is wether or not he's a clutch coach, and his record says no.
