Everyone says this... but Clemson has the 5th highest talent composite of any team in college football without using the portal.

You are treating it like a video game. Talent isn’t the huge factor. It matters and is a factor but a 5 star with no meaningful snaps thrust into a huge game is less valuable than a good veteran that has a couple of years of snaps and knows the role.

That’s what the portal is ideally suited for. Get guys that can play, that have experience and can be able to take some meaningful reps. Guys that fit what you want to do and allow you to manage your roster better.

This is true... but the reality is it takes a lot of transfers a season to learn the role, just like it does a freshman.

Clemson (due to not taking transfers) has guys who have been in their system their whole career. It would be one think if their talent level was low due to losing transfers and not picking any up. But they have very few exiting transfers.

I think they need SOME. Sometimes you have a whole and getting a portal player is a better option than having a guy you missed on fill that hole. But overall due to their retention they don't have a talent issue.

They have a coaching issue.

Clemson got the auto bid that’s why they made it.

Otherwise, committee had them out

Clemson loaded with Freshman and Sophomores will be tough next year.

Not as much as you would think, especially if that is a factor when taking guys. The game isn’t about stockpiling the best talent for a coach like Huepel, it’s about the best fit. Especially if it’s a depth rotation guy and it’s an 18 year old freshman vs a redshirt sophomore that’s more mature, has a couple years of experience in the college game AND you can make it fit them.

Time of game rankings are great for headlines, terrible for measuring team strength.

I mean I'd rank them above SMU and Indiana...maybe above the Vols if this shite show continues.

Talent isn't their issue. The main issue for Clemson is they haven't been able to find a decent replacement for Venables as their DC. Their OC isn't that great either but they could always fall back on Venables at DC in their "glory" years.
And we now know Venables was using the old Connor Stallions/Michigan method of calling D. Even if he gets canned by BlowU and goes back to Dabo I don't think things would be the same. Helmet mics this season took care of any leftover shenanigans.

Clemson didn't deserve to be in there at all. They had 1 win over a mediocre at best smu at an opportune time. Guarranteeing all 5 champs get in was dumb. They were a 3 loss team and still 16th. If that 5th is top 12 fine, if not they should kick rocks.

Actually, if they had 1 loss in conference and 2 losses out of conference like they did... they'd have been playing Texas in the SECCG to make it into the playoff from the SEC too.

And left out of the playoff.

Idiot.
