It’s already changed immensely in my lifetime. The BCS, CFP, and recently the Transfer Portal have been major changes to the game. This doesn’t even include the on-field product. The sport is much more corporate, and with the NIL, it will become even worse in that regard. The players hardly seem like students. We have university donors flooding the athletic department with cash, while other buildings are allowed to look like garbage. The money spent on a random defensive lineman far outweighs that which is spent on an overachiever in the academic sector.

Factor in opt outs from bowls becoming the norm, which may spread to regular season games.

There’s a lack of parity which seems to worsen with the playoff. The uniqueness of college football and the lack of a formal postseason is being wiped out.

I’m wondering if and when things will go too far and the popularity of the sport will dwindle.

For one, the quality of the product is not being played at an amateur level. Its NOT NFL. Its different. Its not a lower grade product. SEC for example. The coaches are paid the same. The stadiums are bigger.

Not at all.

The SEC ruled in the BCS era and it has ruled in the CFP era and will continue to do so as long has programs are willing to adapt and evolve with the changing times.

I think most fans are. Soon, we'll see more games and a bigger playoff. It's not good for the sport, IMO.

Yes. There are some worrying trends in college football most won't acknowledge. We love college football, here more than anywhere else to be honest, so admitting that there are some real issues that need to be addressed is not easy.

"Bah gawd! You are saying college football is evil!!"

No. I am saying we need to address some issues with the sport as it exists or we run the risk of it declining in popularity. Even setting aside the COVID year attendance to live games is down.

Yes.

In my opinion, CFB is the greatest sport on the planet.

Updates, small changes, and tweaks should be expected.

Major changes can possibly ruin the sport.

We are doing it to ourselves....

Just pay attention to the number of “fans” clamoring for 8-16 team playoffs.

Also paying players is absurd...

I would like someone to explain to me how this would work and how it would be fair to all players and all programs.

That’s because an academic overachiever is coming to the university for a product
The DL is the product.

Not concerned at all. I think the product of today is better than at any point in history. I understand that some people don't like change, but that is an unreasonable position, as change is the only constant in life.

I'm worried about what this country is becoming. Football is just a small part of that, but yes it's on a downward trajectory as is everything else in America.

The fan base that supported college football is slowly dying
It was to go back to campus and tailgate and bring the family and catch up with old friends
The TV demand is not going anywhere
On Sat in the fall I'm gonna watch but paying the exorbitant prices for tickets and parking and tailgating has turned off a lot of people and it's not going to be easy to get that back

Worried about it in terms of hurting Alabama? Not at all.

Worried about it in terms of it basically changing everything that makes college football great? Yes.

Saban rules the roost, but you can't lay blame solely at his feet. Other coaches (many of which are way overpaid) need to up their game.

Bama has lost to inferior teams in the past so they are in fact beatable with less talent. Blame the other coaches for lack of parity.

It is totally different, like semipro or something. When players are being paid, then it will take another dive. It will be down like the NFL before long. Those boomers, like some of you call them, built the game where it is today, along with Gen. X. These new fans don't have it in them to travel, tailgate all day, then stay at the game for hours. Thats why you've been seeing alot of the students outta there after halftime.

College football has become a pretty terrible product. Most of the country has lost interest. Talk to anyone who lives in areas outside of the Southeast and select spots like Oklahoma and Columbus, Ohio. What other sport, college or pro, offers no chance for more than half the competing teams to win the title? The same tiny number of teams compete in the playoffs every season. The recruiting difference is a joke with no easy solution. Watching one team of four and five stars play a team of three stars has a predictable outcome. I still can't fathom why sidewalk fans of teams like Bama and LSU get so excited about winning a championship when they basically get to select the best players before the other team gets to sign anyone up. It's like cheering for the 8th graders to win a dodgeball game against the 4th graders. Congrats, I guess.
